When will these asshats learn that retarded people cannot help the way they are, and shouldn't be made fun of? I hope everyone who makes fun of retarded people suffers a brain injury and becomes retarded themselves.
And the same with gay people. We should trade these assclowns for the Palestinians.

"And the same with gay people. We should trade these assclowns for the Palestinians." I meant trade the people who make fun of gay people for the Palestinians, not the gay folks themselves.

I think "asshat" is going to be my new catchphrase. You are dead on - why are people so threatened by folks who aren't like them? This world would be a terribly dull place if everyone was exactly the same. And it really is bad form to poke fun at someone for something that they have no control over. If someone is just an asshat then they deserve to be mocked unmercifully, but if they have a genuine disability that's a no-no.

It's an unfortunate tendency learned in childhood that some people never grow out of. Children ridicule those who are different. I think it's a fear mechanism. Instead of showing fear, they mock, thus reducing their discomfort. This is usually done in the presence of others and signals that "I'm not like that; I'm normal." By mocking together, children feel a kind of perverse bond.
Education is the answer, and a maturity that develops with experience. Once you come to understand what mental retardation is and what challenges come with it, you're far less likely to be afraid, uncomfortable, or thoughtless when speaking about it. The strongest antidote is peer pressure. Once you come to realize that those whose opinions you value look down upon you for saying insensitive things, you quickly learn that it's not acceptable behavior.

Because some people feel better about themselves when they make fun of people who are different.
And to anyone getting on the askers case for using the term 'retarded'. Today's Politically Correct term might be mentally challenged but they were called retarded for many years. In many areas the groups that oversee their education and care are called the Board of Mental Retardation & Developmental Disabilities

My three children all have mental retardation. I love them with all my heart. I adopted them and they are perfect to me. Just as any mother would think so.
But here is one possible answer to your question. In order for some people to feel good about themselves they have to put down other people. It makes their weaknesses seem smaller in comparison.
The thing for everyone to remember is people first. In other words....they are not a retarded person or a gay person but a person who has mental retardation or a person who is gay. If we put the people first we will have much less discrimination in our society.

Some people do not want to share spaces with the retarded. They think they should not have any rights being in public places.
I have an autism child and I see how people reacts to him.

Well, I agree in part...I would not wish brain damage on anyone...well, very few, at any rate. The saddest part of this is that disabled people know full well that they are being ridiculed...it doesn't take a high IQ to know when people are laughing at you...disgraceful in my opinion....normal, healthy people should fall on their knees and give thanks that they are not in those shoes, and yet they make fun of the disadvanaged...but not around me! IF I see this going on, I read the doers loud and clear...I cannot bear to see this happen, and I am quite verbal about it. It takes so little to let the wind out of bully's bags. Good luck, and peace.

I agree that people should treat people with disabillities with respect. especially with those in wheel chair's. I wish parents would teach their kids to not stop in front of those in wheel chair's. now that is the worse. I've seen this happen and the parents did nothing. I Think mocking needs to stop cause they would never know when it could happen to them and they'd be in the same position.
