There are two meanings to the word Christian. A Christian is someone who believes that Jesus of Nazareth was the literal son of God and messiah to the Jewish people. If you believe that, then you are a Christian.

The second meaning is "CHRISTIAN" (note the all caps). This implies that you belong to a large, "non-denominational" warehouse church, follow right-wing demogogues, give up access to indivudal thoughts and feelings, and sing along to terrible hymns disguised as pop music. If you are determined to preach about Jesus without paying any attention to how he lived, then you too may be a CHRISTIAN.

The Bible says in 1 John 2:3, 4: "Herein we do know that we know him if we keep his commandments. He that saith I know him and keepeth not his commandments is a liar and the truth is not in him." In these verses the Lord tells us that we will know Him (Jesus Christ) because we do His will--keep His commandments. The term "know" is not intellectual knowledge but an intimate relationship which the true believers have with their Savior. Note that there are alot of people that will tell you "I am saved or I believe in God or I love the Lord" but they do not have an earnest desire to be obedient to God ie., keep His commandments! The Bible refers to these individuals as "tares", "goats", and children of darkness. They may seem very religious but they have never been born from above (saved). That is why 2 Corinthians 13:5 tells us to "Examine yourselves whether ye be in the faith..." We need to continually look at ourselves in the light of the entire Bible and see how we measure up. If we find that we are not saved or unsure of our salvation, we should continue to cry out to the Lord for mercy.
