I'm going to be a college freshman at Syracuse University, and I have to pay nothing for the tuition (I got a really good financial aid package)...however, I have no money at all to buy stuff for my dorm...even though I have a job

My dad can't help me at the moment because he quit his job about 2 weeks ago (because of the poor conditions and low payment) and he's still looking for another job (well, he already found one, but only starts working next week, & I'll have left by then) so, at the moment we're using my paychecks to pay the bills (which I really don't mind, to be honest)

I won a $1000 scholarship but won't receive the check until mid-September...

What should I do? I barely have 1 week left to get stuff together, and, although my dad told me that he'll send me the money once I get to college (as soon as he can), I'm feeling really depressed...

What if I need money on the spot for God-knows-what? What am I to do?

Can you plz give me some suggestions?

I'm in Syracuse, which is why I noticed your question. You could raise money by doing things for other students...laundry, errands, etc. Or, you could trade with others for things you need.

You will likely find that the University has resources (and access to community resources) to meet any emergency need you might have.

In the meantime, for things you want and can't afford right away, try a thrift store. There's a really big one on Erie Blvd, near the Price Chopper supermarket. I think it's easy to get there by bus (with a free transfer downtown), $1 each way. Call Centro for details.

You can try to see if there is a place in your area that gives out the money that you will be getting later but need now. You probably would have to pay a small fee for it, but if you are in a serious bind (which it seems you are) you can see if you can get your scholarship money or even a paycheck in advance. Good luck.

You will do just fine. When going gets tough the toughest gets going... so don't worry about what will happen but be open for new college life... enjoy it.. things settle down. They always do.
