In the wild sick ,weak animals are prey. They hide their illness so they do not end up as another predators meal..House cats still have this ingrained behavior. If your cat is ill I would not let it outside as soon it will go off and die. best to keep it inside. I'm sorry to hear your kittys so ill.

What you can do if you will is get some Rescue Remedy from a health foods store. A little bottle is about $18. You shake the bottle well and put it on the cat's fur between his ears. Three to four drops. Do this as many times as you can in a day, maybe twice a day in this case. It will give him ease for his passing.
You seem so concerned and you can use the remedy too. Just put a few drops in a glass of water and sip it when you treat the cat. The remedy is preserved in alcohol and cats don't like the taste, it will be equally effective put on his fur.
Poor old soldier. Sounds like he has had a good life with you. Remember all the good times with him, the comfort and love you have shared through the years. You have my heartfelt condolences.

When animals are sick and dying, they feel very vulnerable. Cats especially hate letting on that they are in a compromised condition. Further, they perceive their illness as an "enemy" and try to "hide" from it.
I'm sorry for you and your sick kitty. We just said good-bye to our 14 year old Himalayan cat who had lung cancer. She did the very same thing you described-- she became very withdrawn and hid a lot, which was totally unlike the outgoing kitty we loved since she was a newborn kitten. Sadly, she never let on that she was so ill until a week before she was put to sleep.

Cats, when ill or dying, find a secluded place to go Must just be a personal thing with the feline world. When I was young, I had a cat fall ill to FeLV. She started hiding on a Friday, come Monday morning, she was brought to the vet and dx and was put to rest.
Good luck with your baby. If ever he seems to be in pain or you think there is suffering, please bring him in to the vet to be humanely euthanized. No sense in suffering.

on a more personal note, since i now have my elderly father AND his equally old cat living with us, i can sympathize with your question.......we are doing the best we can, making sure they know that they are cared about and loved.......and when it comes time for either one of them, i am just hoping it is peaceful .........at this moment neither one of them seem to be in any discomfort........sorry, but this subject is very painful for me to talk too much about, its just accepting this part of life, and eventually having to let go.........we have been very blessed to have my dad with us so far for just over two months.........each day is different and i'm feeling somewhat stressed, but i feel that God will give me the needed grace, comfort and strength as i go thru this journey with my dear father..........Peace to you too, Sharon T. from ohio

I'm not sure. Must be something instinctual. He wants to be alone when he dies I guess. Thats what they do in the wild. Maybe its time to just let him go.

Sorry you kitty is very ill. I think it is natural instinct for animals to be like that. It hurts us for them to do that but they are separating themselves from their pack(family) so they won't attract preditors to harm their pack(family).

Maybe they love you too much so they don't want you to hurt and see them die or dead at your house
