Its something cats do when they watch a prey they cannot reach. They do the same when they sit behind a window watching birds.. the humming sound appears to come from them fantasising about playing with or eating the prey.

Whenever a cat meets another cat it purrs to indicate peacefull intentions and it probably thought of the tail as a cat.

Cats do things that nobody can really explain. My cat licks herself if I pet her. I'm sure your cat just has it's own interesting personality like all other cats.

Well, my cats have always chattered their teeth and sort of growled when they see birds outside. I always thought maybe they do that because they know they can't get to it. Are you sure she isn't just growling?

This is actually quite common. This could be many reasons be the most likely is that it does not want to play with it and is annoyed.

maybe she's preparing to attack it. my cat will crouch down real low and shake her butt a few times before she attacks a furry thing.

I think she might be growling in a threatening way like she's about to pounce.
