here in wyoming, we don't have that ban, thank god. There was one bar called LBM that banned smoking, they went out of business in 3 months. But actually most of out resterants are smoke free here. It definetly cut down on my going out to eat.

The non smoking ban comes in to force in England later on this year, or early next year.
I think a lot of businesses will lose money due to this, especially in the winter months.
I suppose they are bringing the ban into all pubs, clubs, restaurants and cafes at the same time so it makes it everyone can't go to the place where you can smoke.
I am not sure how bad it has effected the trade in Scotland and Wales.
I wouldn't like to try and enforce the ban on a Saturday night / Sunday morning when everyone is drunk.
I have decided I will not go to any of the places I can't smoke, I would rather sit outside and eat and have a cig.

Sorry just read the question again and realised I didn't really answer it. I have been up all night. I am going to bed so I don't do the same mistake again.

Smokers here just go outside. There's no smoking inside restaurants or bars, but most places have patios where smokers can go. Since I live in a college town though, sometimes you can get away with smoking inside bars. The later it gets and the more crowded it is, the less likely it is that someone will say something to you about it.

In California, most of the bars created outside patios attached to the club or bar for the smokers. If they were a smaller bar and didn't have room for a patio, they created some sort of system where the person could leave and return without paying a cover or dealing with IDs again. It didn't slow down business at all and in fact, more non-smokers would come out to play.

I'm Irish and we've a smoking ban over here. I'm a smoker but I'm happy with the ban. I smoke less when I'm out which I'm' glad of! Most pubs have places where you can smoke outside with heaters and a roof etc. Although by the end of the night, I usually spend most of my time in the smoking area of the pub. It's where the best craic is to be had!!

I am in Austin and there has been a smoking ban here for less than a year. When it first took place many bars did not comply with the new law. Actually even today many bars downtown still turn their heads when they see people smoking, in turn allowing smoking. Otherwise we will wait until we go to a bar that has a outside patio.

We no longer go out to the bars. We sit around at house parties and get trashed and cause general trouble around the town. The smoking ban in general is a waste. I know plenty of non smokers who even smoke when they go down to the bars for a drink or two.

I go to a lot of bars in my area and so far the law states if liquor is sold as the main fare then smoking is allowed, but for restaurants that do most of their trade in food sales then smoking is prohibited. I am a smoker and it has not bothered me to go into an establishment and be prohibited from smoking. If I feel the need to light up I just excuse myself and go outside, no big deal.

Here in the DC area, we had a number of local districts enact smoking basn over the last couple of years, and every time, there was great public outcry aboutthe abuse of rights and the threat to local business' customer flow....but as time passed and they did surveys of the areas' dining economies post smoking bans, they found that the restaurants were largely doing better...they might have lost a few stubborn barflies, but gained more family clientele (lose 1 guy who nurses his beer, gain 4 hungry mouths--you do the math). The rest of the customers evidently adapted.
