Green Label is the one we can't get here in California, I think the Green Label has more alcohol in it. Right? Cause we can buy black label everywhere.

In October, 2004 it was announced that all generally-available Jack Daniel's products would henceforth be bottled at 80 U.S. proof (40% alcohol by volume), which is the highest proof allowed in some jurisdictions; this will simplify the production process. (This reduction in alcohol content was condemned by Modern Drunkard magazine.) Previously to this, the famous black-label brand (the better-quality, higher-priced product) had generally for several years been 86 proof, where legal, the lower-end green label 80 proof; these marked reductions from the previous practice until recent years of bottling the black-label product at 90 proof and the green-label product at 86. Both are made from the same ingredients; the difference is determined by professional tasters who determine which of the batches will be graded out as worthy of being labelled with the prestigious black label, the rest being sold under the green label.

Sheesh, I love supergrumpers' answer. So helpful. Now, back to your question...

Up until October 2004, the Black Label was for the original recipe of Jack Daniels, which is 90 proof. However, some districts don't allow any types of alcohol with more than 80 proof, so they created a slightly different recipe which lowered the alcohol content down to 80 proof and put it in the green bottle. Because California doesn't have this type of restriction, they never had to sell the green label in CA. However, this practice went away in October 2004, and now they ONLY make 80 proof (so I think they have gotten rid of the green label).

But if you want a "smooth" Jack Daniels, you'll want to try Gentleman Jack. It's also 80 proof, but it goes through an extra filtering process before it is bottled, which makes it smoother.

I think the difference might be in the alcohol proof. The green label is a higher proof than the black.

I don't know. I don't drink alcohol because I don't want my life ruined and controlled by booze.

I have more important things to do.
