am putting together a DVD which will contain a 45 and a 20 minute video, as well as a 30 second introduction and a 30 second menu background. All these clips are in the AVI format and were created with the Windows Movie Maker. I am using Roxio's DVD Builder to create and burn the DVD.

When I viewed my first attempt on the TV, the 45 minute video played fine, but the 20 minute video skipped repeatedly and finally froze up. I quickly determined the problem was disk fragmentation (the 20 minute clip was in 108 pieces).

I defragged my drive and burned another DVD, but this time I had problems with the 45 minute video. I figured out that Roxio is creating its files on the hard drive before burning the DVD, and those files are probably fragmented as well.

On my last attempt, I had Roxio create an image of the DVD on my drive rather than actually burning it to DVD. I then defragged this image and burned it to DVD. As I watched the 65+ minutes of video for about the tenth time (I had made several previous changes) I thought I finally had the problem resolved. Then with less than two minutes to go, the 20 minute video starting skipping and froze up.

I am using low compression on Roxio, which puts about 4.1 GB on my 4.7 GB DVD. I am also burning the DVD at 1x speed to try and avoid any buffer issues.

My latest thought is that my DVD player is just not working well with these DVDs. It is an older model Denon that I purchased not too long after DVD players hit the market. I have tried the DVD on my PC, and on our other player (a newer Yamaha) and it seems to work fine. The problem didn't occur until the very end of the disc, so I'm thinking that perhaps the Denon is having problems reading the outer most tracks.

Since the Denon is on our family room TV, I would like to get the disc to work there so that I can play it for friends and family. I thought I would see if any one in this forum has any other suggestions before I give up and accept that my older DVD player is the problem
Might want to take a look at showshifter here http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/video_capture_tools/showshifter.cfm it is really for tv tuner cards but will work without capture card. I have not tried what you are wanting to do with it but it should do the trick.
