I just got a new puppy the breeder says she dewormed the puppy 2 times and I might see something in his waste. I saw live worms moving in his waste. Is this normal? He is to see the Vet Saturday for his 1st visit.

5 weeks old?? Wormed twice?? A puppy shouldn't even be away from his mother at 5 weeks! I sure hope it's a large breed! Small breeds should stay with their mom longer. Also, deworming a pup should take place as early as 6 weeks, not before, then again as directed by the vet, depending on the medication given. The vet will give you a couple doses of a dewormer for him. At that time, any worms seen passed in the stool should be dead. He must have a heavy infestation to be passing them at 5 weeks.

Good luck with the new pup! Remember to neuter by 6 months of age and to start on a heartworm preventative for a healthy dog!

First 5 weeks is too young for the puppy to be away from mom and littermates. In most states it is illegal to buy, sell, adopt or give away ANY puppy before it has completed it's 7th week and in many others it is illegal before 8 weeks. No RESPONSIBLE breeder will sell a puppy under 8 weeks.
As for your question take a stool sample to your vet and have a fecal test done. Puppies get worms very easily and even if they have been dewormed by the breeder it doesn't mean that they still don't have worms. It is possible they weren't even dewormed for the right type of worms or at the right stage of the cycle.

There's lots of different kinds of worms, so the breeder may have dewormed for one type but not another. Take to a vet to determine the type of worms (you'll have to take a poop sample with you) and to get the appropriate deworming medication.

Honestly, any breeder who sells a puppy at 5 weeks is probably not on the up-and-up and I wouldn't be surprised if she lied about the deworming. Pups shouldn't leave the mom and litter until at least 8 weeks of age, more like 10-12.

It is very common for puppies to have round worms but they can have different kinds of worms too. Most dewormers that are given to puppies are for round worms and from what I have seen those are excreted dead within a day or two. Not all dewormers will kill all the different kinds of worms. Just tell your vet about the problem and they will take a stool sample but just incase you may want to carry a sample with you. The vet can give you the proper dewormer. Don't worry, dogs get worms but that is an easy fix. Good luck with your new baby.

Not normal ???able if the puppy was really wormed 2 times before..... make sure you let the vet know, and call the breeder to find out what they wormed the puppy with (name of wormer) and the dates this will be very important for the vet to know....

Depends... if the worms in the waste are still alive this makes me think it is tape worm. Are they white and about the size of a grain of rice and wiggle. If so it is tape worm and a regular worm treatment does not treat tape worm. A special tape worm treatment is used. To diagnose tape worm the vet needs a stool sample so bring one to the vet or if the worm look like what I have described you can just tell the vet and they will know. A regular fecal swab will not show tape worm you must specifically tell your vet about this problem.

If the worms are large as in 3-4 inches long then they are round worms. However roundworms are only in waste after they are killed.

Hook worms are not visible in feces.

There are also pin worms which look kind of like strands of hair.

However since you say they are still alive I think they are tape worms and your vet will have to prescribe a specific treatment. Over the Counter wormer does not work for tape worms.

Call your vet and explain what is going on. They'll help you.

What kind of breeder releases a five week old puppy???? Most breed clubs require that the dogs be at least 8 weeks. If this dog is unhealthy and released at such a young age, and the person says s/he is a member of their national breed club, you need to report them to that breed club.

If the vet says that the dog is unhealthy, you need to contact the breeder back. If you bought from a reputable breeder, it will be in your contract that the dog is healthy and they will guarantee it or usually they will pay the medical bills. If you didn't buy from a reputable breeder, then I urge you to learn about what they are and only buy from them (or rescue) in the future.

I'm very sorry you are going through this and I hope it all works out.

Not if he's been wormed twice. Make sure you take a stool sample to the vet and he'll get you the right worm medication for the type of worms your puppy has.

This pup should still be with his mom. I doubt that the breeder wormed him at all. In fact I'd be worried if the pup had been wormed twice in five weeks.
It's probably round worm, most pups have them. But take him and a stool sample to the vet.
