You could wait for the Playstation 3 to come out. It's not only a gaming console, but it includes a blu-ray player. Note that the most recent blu-ray player cost nearly $800-$1000. The PS3 will end up costing $500-$600.

the 2 new formats that are out blueray and hd dvd are not compatiable there will never be aplayer that will play both. remember beta vrs vhs? beta was better but vhs won the war the talk out there with vendors is blue ray how ever if you dont wont to spend 1000. bucks right now buy a new tv that has hdmi imputs and buy for around 100 buck the dvd players that upconvert to 720 p or 1080 i and wait for the dust to settle the debate

It may or may not, so I would wait. In a year both formats will probably have players selling for $300, then content will decide which one wins.
