In ancient Jewish tradition Satan is simply an angel doing the work that God assigned to Satan to do.
The word Satan means challenger. With the idea of Satan challenging us, or tempting if you will. This description sees Satan as the angel who is the embodiment of man's challenges. This idea of Satan works closely with God as an integral part of God plan for us. His job is to make choosing good over evil enough of a challenge so that it becomes clear to us that there can be only one meaningful or logical choice.
Contrast this to Christianity, which sees Satan as God's opponent. In Jewish thought, the idea that there exists anything capable of setting itself up as God's opponent would be considered polytheistic or setting up the devil to be an equally powerful polarity to god or a demigod.
Oddly, proof for The Christian satan/devil mythology is supposedly found in the ancient Jewish texts that were borrowed to create the bible. One can’t help but wonder how Christians came up with such a fantastically different interpretation of Gods assistant Satan in their theology.
Other hints about Satan’s role in human relations can be seen if you look at the name Lucifer. It meaning in the original tongue translates as Light bearer or light bringer. Essentially the bringer of enlightenment. The temptations of the Satan idea bring all of us eventually into Gods light. Hardly the Evil entity of Christian mythology.

"the only one that truley loves them and gave them life"
I have a hard time with a God who "truley loves" me threatening me with eternal suffering and damnation if I do something "wrong".
From an interesting essay:
The nice things Christians say about their God sound exactly like the nice things that an abused child says about his abusive parent: "Daddy is so nice to me, even though I'm so bad. If he does bad things to me, it's really my fault. He is so wonderful. He takes me to Disneyland and does so many good things for me. I don't deserve all his love." This is what a bruised and battered child might be telling the doctor who is bandaging the cuts, setting the broken bones and bathing the bruises which the father has just inflicted.
Some Christians deny that their God causes us any harm. But the Bible teaches otherwise: God is in control
Actually, the Christian God as described in the Bible is even worse: suppose an abusive father as described above were to get his children together and say something like this: "You are all so wicked and bad that I really ought to kill you all. But I don't want to do that because I am so loving. So how about this? Your older brother is the only one who has always been good and obedient. Suppose I arranged for him to be tortured to death? Then I would be content, and, as long as you always remember that I could do the same to you but don't, we'll always be together. And you needn't worry about him being dead, because he's going straight to heaven."
Isn't that pretty much the same as what the Christian God has done, according to the New Testament and Christian theologians?
To insist that God is kind and loving toward us and to deny that he is also the cause of our griefs and our suffering, having created us as we are, 100% as we are, is a classic example of psychological denial.

Well, do you fear you mother? God is like a parent, only on a bigger scale. And a lot of people (like...um...me, for example) don't believe that satan exists. But still. Even if there is a satan, why fear the person/higher power that will save you. Respect, yes. Love, yes. Fear? How 'bout not.

Yeah and the one that lets 6 million jews die in WWII and lets hundreds of people die every day in Iraq. And let hundreds of thousands get killed, raped, and mutilated in Rwanda. How dare they not love him!?!?!
Exodus 11:5 And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.
11:6 And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more.
11:7 But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel

Why should you fear the one that is protecting you? Wouldn't it make more sense to fear Satan? Either way, neither god nor Satan exist.

Because some of us don't think there is a God (and, consequently, no Satan). So the whole idea of me being protected doesn't work, when I don't believe in the threat. Or the saviour you speak of.
So thanks for the concern, but I really thought this through.

OK, but I'm a Philosopher and its a little hard for me to swallow the devil theory in the least! I'm 43 and haven't seen a little red man with a pitch fork to date. It to me seems all like scare tactics. If you really believe in the devil then by all means show him to me, im more than willing to be patient enough to wait and see him in person any time your willing to bring him by. Then and only then will i swallow this theory you are talking about.

You shouldn't be surprised my friend. This is to be expected. Man has a very wicked heart. There is a verse in Romans that you might find very helpful. Romans 1: 18-21 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them. For since the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities- his eternal power and divine nature has been clearly seen being understood from what has been made, so that men are with out excuse. For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their foolish hearts were darkened.
This verse is saying that God is evident to all and man knows there is a God, he just chooses to turn his back on the truth.
Also in Romans 1: 28-29 it says furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity.
You are going to see evil all around you. People are going to put down Christians, mock them, ridicule them and turn their back on Christ. But as Christians we shouldn't back down or give up. We should not become discouraged. What can man do to us? God is our help my friend. Pray for these people for they know not what they do. They are needy people, but they are proud and do not want ot accept Christ. Pray for them and continue to spread the truth. That is our calling...I will live and die for the truth and i know God has called me to live my life for him reaching lost people. I will not back down.
God bless you my friend!

Why would you fear your protection... shouldn't you fear the threat and find comfort in the protection.
I don't fear what can't effect me, since god and Satan are mythical figures (IE not real) i do not fear either.
