cereal would be a good choice but it won't go bad and with a fridge you can have milk. you could also have things for sandwiches, salads. and so many more things all you have to do is look at whats in your parents fridge and see what will work for you. good luck at college.

Get yourself a HotPot - it's an electric thing that looks like a small coffee pot but you can use it to heat soups, stews, etc. They're cheap (about $10) and you can heat just enough for a meal. If you've got this, you won't need a kettle either.

Got a Joe Foreman (or comparable)? If not, check garage sales or on-line "give-away" sites in your hometown. You can cook vegetables, burgers, chicken, chops, etc. Just sprinkle with a bit of Cajun seasoning and let it cook!

Is there a slow-cooker sitting around? You can add the ingredients in the morning and let it cook all day - have your friends contribute an ingredient and make a pot of soup, stew or chili. They'll appreciate the companionship and the meal!

Also, a mini food processor/chopper (about $5-10) will come in handy, as will a CAN OPENER.

Is there some reason why you can't have a small microwave? If so, how about a toaster oven. You could use it for making toast (bread, bagels, etc.), baking frozen cookies (when those cravings hit), cooking frozen meat pies, etc. Make sure you have a couple of pans that fit.

Food:

- tuna is always good (protein) - tuna salad (just chop celery, onion, pickle and add some fat-free Hellmann's Mayo - also tuna makes a terrific topping on a salad.
- cans of flakes of ham, flakes of turkey, chick peas (make your own hummus), beans (for chili, soup, stew), soup
- cereal - something healthy - i.e. Oatmeal Crisp, etc.
- instant oatmeal packets - you can cook them in your HotPot
- cereal bars - always handy in a pinch
- crackers
- herbs/spices - the cheap ones from the dollar store - cinnamon, salt/pepper, garlic, cajun seasoning, paprika, chili powder, chicken and/or beef boullion cubes
- visit your Bulk Store for dried vegetable flakes (added to Hot Pot with a boullion cube makes instant homemade soup) and similar products - they're light & easy to store (get a plastic storage container)
- Okay, okay - Mac & Cheese - if you DO make it, add a can of mixed vegetables and a can of tuna/turkey/ham - bake for 20 mins at 350 if you can - if you can't bake, that's ok as it's already cooked and tastes great - may be reheated in your HotPot.
- PJ & J (just buy WHOLE WHEAT bread and bagels)
- remember your staples - instant coffee, tea, hot chocolate, sweetener, etc.
- make sure you can buy fruit/veggies - for times you can't, keep a few cans on hand.
- "don't forget your vitamins"

If relatives/friends come to visit, ask them to bring your favourites already in single serve portions, frozen (if need be). That way you'll have the taste of home now and again. A friend of mine made a big batch of spaghetti sauce (with meat) and canned it for her son to take to school. All he had to do was boil pasta (which he bought when it was on sale), warm the sauce, top with cheese and it was done. It was like he was at home with mom. Good thing he had a ride back/forth - that was a LOT of canning jars.

If you're planning on soup/stew/chili/pasta and the like, day-old rolls (sold at a discount) from your local bakery are the BEST!

Shop at cheaper "bag-your-own" stores or bulk stores (where you can scoop a much smaller quantity than is normally sold in grocery stores) as your money will go further. Grocery store gift cards are always a good idea. If there's a WalMart nearby, check if they have a grocery department, too (but resist the temptation to use your gift card for CDs, etc.).

get one of those small hot pots from West Bend. It's good for heating up water for coffee, tea, hot chocolate, soups.

Then stock up on coffee, tea, cup-o-noodles, yogurt, peanut butter.
You can always buy fresh fruit and veggies for a nutritious snack. All that studying makes you hungry and you'll find yourself snacking much more.
But you can work off the calories by running/jogging to clear your mind and get your energy level up.
