That depends if this is the first time you've ever dyed your hair, and if you're going light or dark. If you are going lighter and it's your first time, start coloring the hair about 1 inch from the scalp to the ends. Why you asked? It's because the body heat radiating from your head will speed up the processing and the hair closer to the scalp will lighten up faster than the ends giving your hair an unnatural color. Okay, now if you have lightened your hair it's best to start at the outgrowth first due to the fact that the hair closer to the scalp needs the extra boost to lighten the outgrowth first before the rest of the hair gets treated.
If you are darkening your hair the same thing applies. Whatever you are going to do, make sure you read the instructions CAREFULLY before you proceed. Good luck!!!!
P.S. I'm a retired hairstylist. Good Luck

Do the middle first then go back and do the roots and ends because the heat from your head will make the roots dye faster and you don't want the ends damaged.

You should start at the roots first. Cause otherwise it will get all messed up and it will look horrible.
Good luck if you are getting your hair dyed.

Go to a salon, you can overlap color and end up with color bands or different colors throughout the hair, you can't see what you are doing in the back of your head to do 1 inch from the scalp anyway the way it should be done. Why does everyone try to do things like this at home???

start at the ends then wait 20 minutes then do the roots and wait 10 minutes and rinse. approximate times. Roots will soak up more color than ends so it will be way darker or brighter than your ends if you leave them on for the same time.

you start at the ends of your hair cause the heat from your scalp makes the dye work faster on your roots that's why you do them last

virgin hair starts at one inch from roots (otherwise you will get 'hot spots' where the roots are intense color and ends are almost normal)
unvirgin hair at the roots.

If you lightning your hair you start with your root's , if you don't you'll have what we call " Hot root's " If you're coloring your hair you would do the same process.
