Actually the Christian divorce rate, according to the research is equal to the non Christian divorce rate.
Still a very sad state of affairs for all involved.
Things to look at when studying statistics.
1) people were only asked if they had ever been divorced, and if they were Christian or not.
This fails to take into account, people who were divorced before they accepted Jesus Christ into their lives and changed from their old life to the life of God and his will for us.
2) People were only asked if they were Christian.
This fails to take into account the fact that on any Given Sunday morning or evening, 75 percent of the poplulation is not in Church. I would say Walmart has a better sunday attendance record than the Christian churches combined. So if they had asked further to find out if these Christians were actively walking with God and his will for them, we would have a very different outcome.
3) Sadly, many of our Christian churches have adapted worldly lifestyles without even realizing it. For if God said that a man and woman whom are married are now one flesh, he certainly meant exactly that. The world tells us that even though we are married, we are separate independant individuals who need a life apart from each other as well as one together. Sadly the churches do this exact thing, by having separate mens groups and activities, and separate womens groups and activities, and have no couples groups and activities. There is nothing wrong with mens and womens separate activities and groups as there are many single and widowed members in churches, but we sorely lack at keeping the one flesh union sacred by Gods own word.
By doing this, the church unknowingly has down graded marriage to simply a sexual union inside a bedroom and a seperate union inside the church and the world.
I do not write this to condemn the church, as I can see that you are not a believer to start with, and the fact that the bible tells us to live a life that you can see that we are different. I understand your question to be, What is so different between me and you?
We have failed to live differently than you, I can surely admit that. So, this is a wake up call, hopefully, to the church (body of Christ) to change the rules and groups and such back to Gods original and unchanged way that it was written.

You hit it when you said 'Americans claim to be christian.'
They claim to be. They may go to a 1 hour sermon on a Sunday, and go to a Easter function, but that's about the extent of their religion
Married couples that read the Bible together daily are 800 times less likely to divorce.
Yes true Christians will divorce, this is an imperfect world. Keeping God as the third braid in the rope of marriage strengthens the bond and chance of divorce is very little.

Well, actually, you can't lose your salvation, so you won't see them in hell.
But that is very unfortunate that Christians are getting divorces and destroying God's beautiful picture of Christ and the church.
