Actually for me it was Atkins, although I'd not recommend staying strictly on it past hitting your goal weight...
I used to could just cut back on my calorie intake (eliminate junk food) and exercise, and the pounds would fall of...last year I tried that and it didn't work anymore...my regular diet is very carb heavy (breads, potatos, and some sweets) so a friend suggested Atkins...
I lost 35 lbs in about 3-1/2 months (Atkins, calorie max 1300/day, and exercise at least 5 days a week, 1 or 2x a day), and since being on my own maintenance plan I gained 5 back but I waffle up and down about 5 lbs because I do allow myself "treats" and margaritas and such...when I put on a few lbs, then I get more strict until I get 'em back off...
That's my story...I started Atkins 11 mos ago, and use a modified version of it for maintenance....I (now) still drink only diet sodas, get low carb versions of a lot of foods that have 'em, rarely eat white bread, potatos, pasta, etc...

I lost about thirty pounds in less than two months on The Movie Star Diet, by Steve Simmons. The new version won't be out for a couple of weeks, from what I can tell on their website, but it's definitely worth it in my humble opinion. It covers the gamut from nutrition and exercise and they are even selling a workout book now, so I might pick that up, too. It's a really different kind of diet than anything else I've tried, and I've tried a LOT. It works well because it doesn't try to restrict you from eating the kinds of foods that you love. It works WITH you, instead of trying to get you to eat a bunch of stuff you've always hated and always will hate.

If you're trying to lose weight and it's not working, you're probably not losing weight because you're not eating the right foods, or you're eating too much of them. 6 small meals a day is ideal. High fiber cereal for breakfast with soymilk, or 2% milk. Have a snack of fresh fruit in between breakfast and lunch. For lunch have lean meats (such as chicken, fish) with a salad of some sort (could be bean salad, or chickpeas with soybeans, doesn't necessarily have to be lettuce; mix it up!). Between lunch and dinner have another serving of fruit (blueberries, grapes, apple, orange), and for dinner basically the same thing as lunch! Stay away from bread and pasta and potatoes. Don't eat anything high in sugar (not only candy, but things such as some cereals), and if you need a sugar fix a tablespoon of honey or maple syrup will help and it's also very healthy for you! Don't eat things high in salt (peanuts, chips), and stay away from sodas.
It's very easy once you get the flow. It's just healthy eating for life. Lifestyle change is the only way to go. Diets don't work.

I went on the Atkins diet in 1973 and lost 59 pounds in a few months. It did not affect my health in any way. However, if I were to do it again today, I would not eat as many fats as Atkins allows. Why don't you speak to your doctor or a nutritionist?

South Beach diet is absolutely the best. I lost 55 lbs from that in just a matter of months! South Beach allows you to choose from different varieties of breakfasts, lunches, dinners, snacks, and deserts that you can have that contain little of everything! (when i say everything i mean calories, carbs, cholesterol..). If you stick to a low-calorie, low-fat diet, and exercise daily, you will be totally surprised on how much you'll lose with South Beach.

I haven't tried any of the fad diets. I gave up the daily soda drinks, drink lots of water, cut out the before bed snacks and started walking 1 mile or so a couple of times a week. I lost 20lbs over a year. I haven't been able to walk as much over the 6 mnths, but have been able to keep the weight off.

All "crash" diet will work at first to reduce your weight, but if you loose more than 3 to 5 pounds in a week, you are loosing lean muscle mass which will slow your metabolism and make you fatter. I have actually worked with clients who have lost 10 to 20 pounds in approximately a week and when I tested there body-fat % they were fatter than before even though the scale said they were lighter. In the end they had to do the same as all of us to be healthy. A better approach would be to take "baby steps" in your nutrition goals. For example: try to substitute healthy foods for unhealthy foods ( a piece of fresh fruit instead of a candy bar, turkey sandwich on whole wheat instead of a cheeseburger, a piece of baked chicken and a salad instead of pizza). Remember to eat 4 to 5 small healthy meals daily instead of skipping meals (starvation actually slows your metabolism). Try to eat healthy 5 to 6 days a week and have 1 "free day" every week instead of trying to be "perfect" all the time. You can enjoy food and be happy with your choices as long as you don't go to extremes every time you feel guilty. Food is pleasurable so enjoy!

Ok, i know atkins is techinally not the best thing for your body because of the cutting carbs, but my parents both did the diet and lost alot of weight. My dad, especially; he lost close to 50 pounds.

Lowfat, with plenty of fruits and vegetables and lean proteins, plus get adequate exercise. Lowfat means no fried foods, avoid cream, butter, cheese, plus learn to read lables for fat content and avoid higher fat foods. But exercise is key, too -- neither diet nor exercise alone can deliver the results of both combined. Good luck!
