It depends on what you need the chilling for. I use BLOCK ice for instance when i want my cooler to stay cooler for a long period of time, such as when I am camping.

I will use cubed ice when I need stuff colder, but for short periods of time (100 small ice cubes melt faster than 1 big one), such as when I keep my beer in a cooler at a tailgate party.

There are two things here: cooling, and staying cool.

Getting cool: You need the cubed ice, because it melts faster. It's the actual melting of the ice that brings the temprature down. Also, the melting ice creates water, water is a great tranmitter of heat, it takes the heat out of the cold drinks (which is what makes it cold). Air is a great insulater, which means it doesn't allow things to change temprature very easily. So, cubed ice makes the ice water, which cools very rapidly.

Staying cool: Once you have the temprature you are looking for, dropping large chuncks of ice (the blocks) into the mix will help keep everything cool for a very long time.

Cubes will keep the things colder in a cooler, but a block of ice will last longer.

It depends on the application. THe block of ice will keep things cool for a longer period of time than the same amount of cubed ice. Reason is that the warmer air will go through the cubed ice in say a cup a whole lot easier than a cup with a block of ice in it. That'll melt the cubed ice faster. BUT if your looking at chilling say, a bottle of wine, 1 block can't cool a bottle of wine better than the cubed ice surrounding the bottle of wine. Unless you have a little indentation that lets the bottle of wine sit in it (but we're talking about a straight up block of ice nothing more). That's it...

Block definitely makes things colder than a cube.

Cubed ice allows the ice to form around whatever you want to chill. Crushed ice is even better than cubed ice for that same reason.

If it is just one cube of ice and one block of ice then I would say the block of ice. But, if you have more than one cube of ice I would say the cubes because they float around and are able to cool more space.

Cubed ice would since it can snuggle closer to the things you want chilled.
Adding some cold water to the ice container would be even better for conducting heat away from what you are chilling. Maybe even throw in some coarse salt like icecream makers use.

Cubed ice makes more sense to me. I agree with the surface area thing.
