Nita Leland has published 2 books, "The Creative Artist" and "The New Creative Artist" that show some amazing techniques in various media. Also Art Escapes by Dory Kanter, and my all-time favourite, Celebrate Your Creative Self by Mary Todd Beam. Distributed by North Light Books, available at (hopefully) any art supplies store.

From Watson-Guptill publishers - "The New Acrylics" by Rheni Tauchid, "Abstract Painting: Concepts and Techniques" by Vicky Perry - both excellent books on technique.

Sorry, they're books you need to hold in your hand... but if you buy one, you get to KEEP it forever!

www.goldenpaints.com

It's a high quality paint manufacturer. They have tons of pages on techniques, ideas, information on their products, etc. One great thing for layering is a matte or clear gloss medium. Golden also makes something called clear tar gel which you can use like a drawing line. You dip something in it like a palette knife and wait for it to start dripping and the drip lasts a long time, it's a liquid line. Another cool think is the gel transfer, it's on their website.

I don't know a specific website for abstract painting, but if you go to art.com, scroll down and click on artpad, you can make some pretty cool pictures and if you turn the opacity down, you could make some abstract picts. with layers.
