New heaters are usually rated at either 5 years or 10 years. This is only approximate. The difference between a 10 yr tank and 5 yr tank, is that the 10 yr tank has two anode rods inside, and the 5 yr model only one.

An anode rod is supposed to dissolve over the years so the metal tank lining does not. The rods only last so long, and once they are gone, the tank will leak within a year or so.

A little know fact is that the anode rods are replaceable & not expensive. Some people who have performed proper maintainence on their water heaters have had them for 30 years or more.
