Gold tequila has been aged in oak which gives it the amber color. The more premium tequilas are called anejo when aged in oak.

White tequila, also called blanco or silver, has not seen the wood in the distillation and aging process. That is typically more popular for margaritas.

Gold tequila is commonly referred to reposado or anejo. Gold tequila is an aging process that takes place in oak barrels. The original tequila is always white. Aging tequila is a relatively new practice used for marketing tequila.

Both white and gold tequila are non aged tequila, gold gets the color from caramel... there are also reposado tequilas which are aged a minimum of 2 months and anejos which are aged a minimum of one year.

My favorite tequila is the silver from Casa Noble...

I love tequila. I have only been sick once and that was from drinking white tequila. I would suggest that you only serve the gold based on my experience.

Gold has a richer flavor IMO. Certainly for Cuervo Gold. I also like their tradicionale too - if you're gonna buy supermarket tequila, might as well make it good stuff.
