My best friend recently lost her husband due to HIV. He nor her never knew he had it until he got sick in April. He died in June. They have been together for 4 years and married for not even a year (married October of 2005). She got tested right after they found out he had HIV and she tested negative. The infectious dicease dr told her she may never get it. She only has to get tested for two years and then they say she is fine. I really dont see how this is possible. But then I got thinking she has been with him for 4 years and tested negative so maybe she does have a good chance. Can someone please explain to me how this is possible? Thanks.

The only way to be 100% sure is to continue getting tested. According to most sources, two tests that are negative that are six months apart demonstrates a high certainty that you do not have the virus. This is based on studies on antibody testing, and how long it takes for the virus to be detectable.
We can assume that she only had protected sex with her HIV+ husband once they found out. So if she was not exposed to the virus in any other ways, perhaps the doctor should have said she was very, very unlikely to have the HIV virus unless she starts participating in HIV-risky behavior.
I just don't like the "she may never get it" language. [Maybe that was your language and not the doctor's.] She may not have it from this exposure, true. But it's not like she's immune.

There is a very high chance that your best friend is not infected with HIV and will never get AIDS. Heterosexual intercourse is major route of transmission for HIV but the probability of getting infected in a sexual intercourse is relatively very low. If the tests were negative, then there is a very very very high chance that she does not have the disease. That's certain.

Get the facts straight Hun HIV can stay dormant for up to 10 years (proven cases) before it will develop in the body But then It can and will become full blown aids at that time

Some people are more naturally immune to HIV. She has been having sex with her husband (presumably) and she is still HIV negative at present. It may be that she is just naturally immune.
Of course, it is such a devastating disease that you really shouldn't take any chances with it even if you think you are immune.

You mostly need a combination of a lowered immune system (often due to drinking, a cold, stress, etc) and a good dose of the virus transmitted into your system through a cut, soor, etc. With anal sex usually there is torn membranes where the virus is easily transmitted. With vaginal sex that can be rarely the case.
HIV cannot be passed by kissing etc.

There have been a few cases where it seems that people can avoid getting it and there are also a few cases where people have become carriers and never get symptoms. But these are rare.

No HIV can lay dormant for up to five years before it pops up. So she could have it and not know.

It is totally possible. I am sure they practiced very safe sex and were very careful if he had any open wounds. You can't catch it just by being around someone who is positive.
