I love people who ask about tips! I'm a hairdresser and 20 years ago I was a shampoo tech. The answer is 10-15% for the stylist, and yes, tip the shampoo tech too. Usually $1-$2 for the shampoo tech if she does a good job. I can tell you right now, many people do not tip, and cosmetologists normally get paid on a commission basis only. If we go to work and business is slow, we make nothing. There have been days when I first started in the business that my tip money was the only way I could afford gas for my car to get home. Take it from me, we do notice who tips and who doesn't, and it makes a difference when you need us to stay over 30 minutes to do your hair - you don't tip - we don't stay! You take good care of us, we take good care of you!

Although it's a matter of choice, you should tip both. The amount of the tip depends on how expensive the bill is, similar to a restaurant. Some women tip by percentage, commonly 20%, but that gets really expensive at higher end salons. A $200 bill ends up with a $40 tip.
If you don't have that expensive of a bill, then go generous on the tip. These girls probably aren't making that much pay other than the tips. The shampoo girls get anywhere from $2-10 per wash. Around 10-20% per person who worked on your hair, or any other treatment you get done at a salon or spa. If one person colored it, and one person cut it, tip them both the same amount.
Use your judgment when it comes to the percent. If you are really happy with the end result, go for the full 20%. If you just satisfied, 15%, and less than thrilled, 10%. If you are completely unhappy, don't leave until they fix it. Most places will fix a bad cut/color for free.

i always tip my hairstylist 20$ ...no matter if i am getting a cut or it colored...this way she does a really good job on my hair! also, you should tip the shampoo girl a couple bucks, but at most salons the stylists will tip out the shampoo girls at the end of the day

depends on what you have to give.
let's face it, if you are a college student, you have no money. i understand. you make good grades and THAT'S my tip. how motherly of me, right?
if you are in the process of starting a new business, you have no money. when you get going in your business, don't forget about me. not that i want your money, but maybe we could help each other out with advertising or something.
if you are really good at something , do that.
i have a client who is elderly. she has no extra money. i understand. she brings me dinner. mmmm so good. i can't cook for sh!t. she's awesome. i know i will have at least one good meal a week as long as she's alive.
some people do a percentage, some do a scale thing (on a scale of 1-10, my service was a 7. i will leave this much. or , my service was a 10, i'll leave more this time.) some people save a certain amount for their hair each month and will give you what's left out of it.
ask how the assistant gets paid. if she gets at least minimum wage you don't have to tip her. the stylists only get paid a percentage of your service. sometimes, the stylists have to tip the assistants per person or service.
the best tip i ever received was from a woman living in an abused womans' shelter with her 2 girls. i did cuts for all of them. when it came time for the bill, the girls pulled out their wallets to pay for their own AND MOM'S. she was so happy to feel 'normal', just by getting her hair done. she felt like a person. i was so touched by her tears. she was crying because she wanted to tip me, but didn't have the money.
any idea how bad i felt for her?
i sent her a coupon for a day at the spa (FREE) for her and her girls. we still keep in touch. she's in college and has a job at the college.

At least 10% to the stylist and yes, tip the shampoo girl too based on whether it was a great shampoo or a disaster.

I tip 15% for a regular shampoo, cut and style. I tip 20% if highlighting/colour was involved. I tip 25% if both colour (grey hair) and highlighting was involved or if the stylist really had to spend a long time on my hair.
I have very thick hair and I know they have to schedule more time for me then for other clients so I tip more to make up for that.
