You may as well let your six year old ride unrestrained in the front as it sounds like you've let your child ride unrestrained in the back for the last six. What parent allows a child to ride in a car unrestrained. Do you think that because your child is in the back that they are fine unrestrained. Kids will be thrown forward in a collision, and they will slam into the back of the frontseat with tremendous force, and it will kill them. Also, your child can be thrown over the frontseat, slam into the ceiling, or if sitting in the middle of the backseat, then your child could be ejected from the car via the windscreen. Rather than letting your child sit in the front passenegr seat, why don't you just drive with your child in your lap, like britney, and at least this will make sure that you finish the job you started, killing your child. Get seatbelts installed in the back, buy a car that has seatbelts in the back, or don't drive with your child in the car. If anything happened to your child, you would never forgive yourself, but then again, it sounds like you've let your child ride unrestrained for the last six years. You've probably held you child in your lap the whole time that they have been alive, thinking that you have the strength to hold on in a smash. You had this picture that your the best mother, holding your child proudly in your lap, until the car smashed, and you and your child went through the windscreen. What a way for you and your child to die, being ejected from a car through the windscreen, like the crash test footage of the mother holding her child in her lap. Sounds like you the mother of the year. I bet you probably smoke as well, whilst holding your child, you've chain smoked the whole time, just to make sure you win mother of the year.

What state.country are you in? The US does NOT have standardized seat belt/child safety seat laws for children.

And to sheeta:

You stated that your child was safe in the back seat of the car because his head was lower than the seat - which is totally untrue.

No matter his height, he can still fly around the car and seriously injure/kill himself even in lower speed accidents.

Imagine that he weighs 50 pounds and you get into an accident at 20 miles per hour - you rear end a stopped car. His 50 pounds is now moving forward at 20mph and he is going to hit the seat in front of him (or dash board if he is in the middle) at 1000 psi - and that can kill him.

Please buckle your children into safety or booster seats.

NOPE! Why are there no seatbelts in the back seat? I would stillhave him ride in the back seat. In an accident the passenger side of the front seat is the worst seat in the car. Seatbelt or no seatbelt. Get it fixed.

i don't think it's "illegal" but they do have to be in a booster seat or carseat and the seat has to be as far back as possible if there is an airbag. If there are no seatbelts in the vehicle then there's nothing they can do about it if you get pulled over. I think that diff states have slightly different rules but I would imagine they are all pretty similar. I got pulled over and got a ticket for not having my 5 yo in a carseat but he was in the back middle and his head was lower than the back of the seat which is safe but I still got a $70 ticket that I am contesting.

Could depend on where you live. In most states it is perfectly legal, but there is that safety issue if you have a passenger side airbag that cannot be disabled (My 98 Dakota has switch to turn it off using the ignition key). But that is only a warning and it is not a law (at least not in my state). The link below contains the seatbelt laws for each state in alphabetical order so lookup your state and find out.

If there are any airbags where your six year old is riding then yes it is dangerous. Check with your state. The reasons why kids shouldn't ride in the front seat is the air bag can cause your child serious damage and even death. If there are no airbags then there is nothing that can snap his/her neck back.

Umm, the laws say 12 years old. If you don't have seatbelts in the back seat, have that fixed.

I am more concerned why there are no seat belts in your back seat. All vehicles made in the last 40 years or more have seatblets.

Not sure about that but if you don't have seat belts in the back than your car isn't legal to begin with..
