I had it done when I was nine, and I was completely fine! They sometimes actually numb the area where they put the needle in for the IV, and then you don't feel a thing. Then the next thing you can remember is that you are waking up and you might be alittle bit sore. Then when you get home, you will get all the ice cream and popsicles you can eat!
If you want to email me at clannforde1161@yahoo.com to talk about it, feel free to do so!

Hi Bianca, I had my tonsils removed when I was a kid, but remember the whole procedure. I did not find anything in the procedure that in any way could be described as traumatic. In fact the idea was exciting and imagine getting all the ice cream and Jello you want after wards! At least that is what I got to eat. Nothing solid for a few days. also you will have to limit your activities for a few days to a week. Including no jumping or straining. Just think you will get out of school a day or two! and won't have to clean your room up for a week. Your tonsils are a filter to keep some toxins out of your system, so I will assume you are doing this because your Dr. recommended it. If you have constant swelling in your throat and sore throat a lot to where your breathing is affected is when most people get their tonsils removed. There is some discomfort after but it does not last long. There is a list of questions below you might want to ask your Dr. So relax and think about the good things ahead of you. I hope they are many.

Bianca, I had it done about a decade ago and it was a really bad experience for me as I had a post-operative infection that wiped me out for about three to six months afterwards. Any surgery involves risk. However, the risk of a tonsilectomy going wrong is pretty low. The reward of being free of the pain of tonsilitis afterwards is worth the risk, in my opinion, even given the bad experience that I had.
After surgery, the registrar came round and gave me these fantastic sponges on a stick, but with serrated edges, in a star formation. You can use them to gouge all the nasty gunk out of the back of your throat after the surgery has been carried out.
Here's the really important bit : The trick apparently, so I was told afterwards, is to remember not to swallow the debris. If you swallow the white bits that get left behind after the surgery, or worse still if any of the pus makes it down your throat to your stomach, you'll likely end up having a post-operative infection. Isn't hindsight a wonderful thing? Learn from my mistake and after the surgery remember: rinse and spit, but absolutely do not swallow!

I am a nurse and am going to be brutally honest. I had my tonsils out when I was 19. Anaesthetic was fine, you don't feel the needles cos they give you a wicked pre-med, didn't know anything about the surgery as was alseep (obviously). Woke up in agony, they wouldn't give me any water, your lips split if they are dry cos they prise your mouth open, they DON'T give you ice cream any more cos they think giving you dry toast, cornflakes and Orange juice (I mean, REALLY!) helps remove the dead tissue that is left at the back of your throat! Oh and by the way, they think the best form of painkiller afterwards is Voltarol suppositories which they try and convince you to shove up your ***! Stick with the fizzy paracetamols.
It's hell for about a week and then it's fine. If you had recurrent throat infections like I did, it's a blessed relief.

I had my tonsils taken out when I was 25. The consultant warned me to cancel any plans for upto a fortnight after as I would feel tired and wiped out for a week or two afterwards. After the op, my throat felt sore which was to be expected and I was a bit tired for a week or so afterwards but apart from that I was absolutely fine. I know it's easy to say but try not to worry too much as you will be fine. Its well worth getting them removed as I had nothing but hassle with them for years before they were taken out.

You will be fine. A Tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgeries in the world. Thousands of people have this surgery every year.
The one thing you do need to know is that afterward your throat Will be too soar to eat "all the ice cream you want!" After a few days you will be back to normal.
Goo luck.

Was searching for info the other day for my 8 yr old daughter and found this site.
Hope it helps.
I've still got my tonsils, so sorry, no actual facts from me.
As for needles, I have loads of injections (blood testing for pregnancy etc) just grit your teeth, look the other way & count or think happy thoughts, it's over in seconds.

My name is Bianca too, what a pretty name you have! Don't worry, this is a simple proceedure and everything will be fine, trust me. Once it is over, you will be like, what was I so stressed about? That was my experience having my tonsils atken out. They make it comfortable for you and you will be done before you know it!

One of my coworkers had hers taken out last month. She was out of work for a week (she couldn't talk) and was fine the next.
Probably when putting you under they'll use the needle in the IV, so you'll only get stuck once.
