That depends on whether it is a son or daughter, because my answers would be different for different genders.
I suppose the #1 thing would be:
Always expect to work hard for what you get. (so many kids are growing up expecting everything handed to them because that's how their parents raised them, and it makes me sick!) They don't make very good adults, either, so that is the best advice I try to give my kids.

I am in my 30's and have two babies...I can only tell from BEING a daughter...

1) Make sure you tell your daughter how much you love her...hug her often...show interest in her life...even if she acts like you're a dork for asking...I wish my Dad had acted more interested.

2) To demand respect from him and her...it's wonderful to have a Daddy that I respect...be consistent in discipline and follow through with promises and discipline

3) Tell him or her that s/he doesn't have to run with the crowd to be cool...easier said than done. Repeat it often and let them know that in a few years, they won't give a crud about the "crowd"...I wish I had stood up more for myself and personal convictions.

there are many things that need to be taught and it is hard to pick just a few and I know that the older he gets the harder it will be...I think you just have to teach you children to do whats right and to learn from mistakes because children are going to make mistakes. I will teach him the things that I value and hope he uses his brain to take what I have given and things that he has learned elsewhere to make himself a person he is happy to be and not a person that I want him to be.....I have so many things that I would like to see him do...but I know in the end it is going to be him who really decides what kind of person he will be....I just hope I can be a guide for him in make that decision.

1. How to be a self sufficient adult, as well help them to be good adults

2. Teach them right for wrong, as well as the down falls to lying

3. Teach them their manners, morals and respect from the beginning.

4. Teach them to work for their belongings so that way they realize things aren't just handed to you

5. Try to teach them as much wisdom as I have and also allow them to learn from self experience.

Treat folks as you'd want to be treated
Follow your own path in life
Believe half of what you see, and none of what you read
Ask questions
Own up to your mistakes and learn from them

You get out of life what you put into it.

It's better to be able to heal your pain/wounds then to never be hurt.

Everything is temporary; the only constant is change.

Treat others the way you want to be treated.
