I am looking for a medium sized hunting dog that will be good with a family. I would prefer a pointer but a good dog is a good dog so it is not a must....I can spend up to 500. I have hunted with several breeds such as labs, britannys, german shorthairs, but I don't have a good view of them when not in the field....any suggestions or comments will help.

Brittany's are wonderful family dogs as well as bird dogs. Try a rescue in your area or petfinder, you may be able to get one that is already trained and temperment tested :-)
I have experience with Viszla's and they are extreamly hyper dogs, you have to be willing to commit a lot of time to exercise.
Make sure you do your research!

we had a chocolate lab that was an excellent bird dog. Other than that, try a brittany spaniel for something a little smaller

Weimaraner. I have a wonderful "bird dog" and I never knew it. I adopted her at age 2 from the shelter, and she is one hell of a huntress. Actually, at times too much of a bird dog. But so worth the extra running.

Golden Retrievers are good bird dogs, and excellent family pets.

I have a beagle. They are good hunters. They sniff a lot. Mine hunts chipmunks in my yard. Plus they are really lovable.
