You see in the media all the time that criminals are being let out of prison early because they are running out of cells. The most obvious answer is build more prisons but another idea I have had is that all petty criminals (theives, muggers, shop lifters etc) should have to serve some time in the army. It would show them discipline and with any luck would give them a career at the end of their time. Does anyone else think this is a good idea, if not then what would you do to ease the situation?

All out of service ships should be used as floating prisons and docked 25 miles out at sea.

What about compulsory buying the Isle of Wight moving all its residence onto the mainland and have our own Alcatraz?

I'd bring back the death penalty.........for violent crimes. Why should we have to pay to keep these scum in prison.

The Army wouldn't want to be used as a dumping ground for petty criminals, and boot-camp style punishments were tried and abandoned in the 1980s.

It would be better to stop criminalising drug users (especially cannabis users) and return to the practice of precribing additive drugs to habitual users as a prelude to tratment to reduce and then cease use - this was done in the UK until the Misuse of Drugs Act (1971) came into force. An enormous amount of criminal activity in the UK is drug-related (the police estimate anywhere beween 30% and 50%) so this would free up many, many prison cells for occupation by hardened career criminals.

What a creative idea... I only wish there were a way to get the federal government to seriously consider it. I would hope that one would insist that repeat offenders and the truly dangerous (murderers, rapists, etc) would remain behind bars- but there are just so many petty drug dealers and pickpockets clogging up the system that putting them in the military is a great idea... Not that the military should be a jail system, but you know maybe give the criminal a choice... You either sit in a 6x6 cell for 3 years or you serve in the military for 3....

Sound like a good idea to me. They could be in a special "bad boys" squadron with a very tough sargeant to give them the guidance and punishment they probably never got at home.

It's a good idea, but probably psychologically flawed in some aspect or another. That's probably why they don't do it.
