a teaspoon of olive or flaxseed oil a day is good. Also a higher quality of food.

You may want to look into Dr Billinghursts BARF Diet. That stands for Bones and Raw Food. My guys have been raw fed for years and I have never had an allergy problem. They get no grains at all. Dogs do not need grains and as long as you are feeding Raw correctly, your dog should have no more problems. Follow the Dr's book or check out Bravo Frozen foods. They will answer all your questions.
You may also want to try Salmon Oil.

If anything adding oil would hurt the dog. If your feeding your dog food that the first ingredient is corn or ground yellow corn, you need to switch your dogs food. that alone could make a big difference. Just think what happens when we eat corn, well the same thing happens to your dog it just goes right through them. Those ingredients are called fillers because the it fills the dog up but has no nutritional value. Also try vitamins like nu vet or missing link.

Adding a little flaxseed oil can help, but the itching may be from allergies. Take her to the vet so you can discuss the possibility of food or environmental allergies.

I add just a little olive oil to my dogs dry food and it has helped improve his coat and skin

It will make the coat shine and at the same time every where the dog brushes into, furniture ect, petting the dog will be an oily mess. It's not good for their internal organs either.

If your dog will eat it, occasionally buy a can of mackeral. My dog loved it(he was a wolf mix though, and he would even catch his own fish sometimes) you could also add egg to his food sometimes. That seemed to help with my dog's coat

YOU NEED TO ASK YOUR VET FIRST!! I WOULD CHANGE YOUR DOGS FOOD FIRST ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE FEEDING THEM A CHEAP FOOD OF SOME SORT. YOU SHOULD TRY NUTRO. CHOOSE THE TYPE THAT BEST SUITS YOUR NEEDS. IT IS GUARANTEED TO IMPROVE YOUR DOGS COAT AND IT IS REALLY GOOD FOR YOUR DOG TOO. IT HAS NO BY PRODUCTS. IF CHANGING YOUR DOGS FOOD DOESN'T WORK I WOULD TALK TO YOUR VET, YOUR DOG MAY BE ALLERGIC TO SOMETHING. *REMEMBER TO GRADUALLY CHANGE YOUR DOGS FOOD!! :)

i use vegetable oil when my dog starts scratching and itching. it doesnt seem to bother him but it sure kills the fleas and ticks and makes his coat shiny when he licks it off.

I'm thinking that adding oil to their food would help help their digestive system stay regular. I give my cat olive oil in her food so she doesn't throw up hairballs and it just comes out in the littler box
