One book you might want to get is "What is the Color of my Parachute?" It talks about starting businesses.

One of the things it suggests is obtaining information from businesses who are doing what you're doing. However, the catch is that you have to contact businesses not in your area.

Obviously, if a competitor is in your area, it would be business suicide to give your trade secrets to someone who is going to build a business running parallel to yours that will hurt your own sales.

However, if you contact businesses that are outside of the state you live in, they will be more inclined to help you because you're not a direct threat to them. The further the business is away from your location, the more at ease they will be at giving you tips and ways to help your business.

If you play your cards right, you may be even able to build up a business relationship with another business in another part of the country where you can refer business contacts to each other since you're not in direct competition.

In regards to your particular service and product, you may want to make some phone calls to chocolate shops or businesses that would serve as suppliers to get a price estimate. If there are other people who do the same thing, the suppliers would know what would be an appropriate amount to get per head.

You'll want to ask a minimum of three suppliers so you can take the weighted average of prices. Just like in shopping for a car, you don't go by the first price. You visit other car dealerships to find out what they're selling for.

The other advantage of getting multiple price estimates is that you can leverage yourself with other suppliers by saying what another supplier is offering and whether that supplier can beat or top that deal.

I would suggest you try calling other businesses outside of your area that provide your services and ask what about their methods.

Another indirect means of gathering information would be to take a poll from photographers and wedding singers that attend numerous events and get their opinion on the peripherals regarding your business. Sometimes they can tell you what is a well-catered wedding and what isn't.

You could also try calling catering services at hotels. They have a sales department that handles the arrangement and planning for special events. If you can get in touch with the PR person there, they might be able to steer you in the right direction.

Las Vegas Hotels do a lot of catering for special occasions serving all kinds of exotic foods. If you look up the phone directory for Vegas Hotels, you may be able to get the contact number.

A word of warning for those in UK thinking of using such a machine at a hotel. Recently, a nephew bought the machine, chocolate etc., without first asking the hotel management where the reception was to take place. Under Health and Safety regulations and Food Hygene regs. it would have required a qualified chef to be present all the time and the cost would have added several hundred pounds to the affair................

This is a lousy idea for a business. If you asked anyone to invest in it I doubt that you would find any investors.
