How many dates you think would be good before asking her.
On the second date she asked me, ' so we are pretty much dating huh?.' I have had 3 dates/times going out with her....

Yes. The phrase "do you want to be my girlfriend" still exists. However, it is quickly being replaced with the phrase "will you go out with me", which has two meanings. When someone asks someone "out" they can either mean on a date, or they can mean skip the dates, lets be boyfriend and girlfriend. I think straight out asking someone to be your girlfriend/boyfriend is waaay better as long as you've dated the person before so they know where you're coming from.
