For anyone who has not met an American, or spent time working with one, going to school with one, or living with one, it is very easy to make judgments and cast opinions.

I think of all the people in the world, the average American would be quickest to help someone in need, provide a brutally honest answer to a question requiring an honest response, and would know with more clarity and certainty, what is right and what is wrong, and would not be afraid to be in the minority, if that meant they were standing up for what they believed in, or standing up for what is just.

Too many people around the world confuse American government with American people. Let's face it, EVERYONE's got a corrupt, self-serving government. Americans didn't invent that. And if you ask me, what our government does is saintly compared to the workings of government in Rome, Paris, Beijing and Moscow.

Americans are the greatest amalgamation of culture, history, races and religions the world has ever seen and will ever see. I think disgust with Americans eminates from disgust with oneself and a deep-seated envy for the ol' Red, White & Blue.

As a well traveled American, I can say without a doubt that we are better tourist than the French and the Brazilians. We are better neighbors than the Chinese or the Indians. We are more giving and charitable than the Iranians or the Syrians (donating to terrorist organizations isn't charity, that's stoking the fire). We are less Defensive than Israel or Pakistan. And every time something bad happens in the world it is our resources, our money, our assistance, and our technology that is asked for. The reason they ask for it? Because even with all the crying, finger pointing, and bad mouthing the world does towards us, they know that we are generous to a fault. Example: We just suffered the loss of the fourth largest port in the country, fifth largest city in the south from Hurricane Katrina, yet when the earthquake struck in Pakistan, we sent $50 million in non-tax charities. That means it came out of the pockets of Americans. That does not include what our government spent. So you may not like us, in fact they may hate us, but they all want to be us. Ironic isn't it. Maybe they need to be nicer to each other instead of looking at us as the Devil and the Savior all rolled into one.

Americans are people that, as long as their financial life is in order, they won't make a mess about anything. The American president's approval rating is about 30% and nobody is doing anything to change that. Do you know why? because they can still afford the car's lease, the mortgage and Mc Donald's. Unluckily, Bush will finish his mandate. Americans should show him how wrong his politics are. American people should start talking loud and clear, and let the world listen. Act, do something, get off the couch and fight for your rights and interests, that have been destroyed by your elected president.

After reading some of the reponses to the question put forth I must say I have never been more proud and appreciative of the efforts of our founding fathers for their success in winning the War of Independence.

Also to all our veterans who went to the aid of all those European countries who could not get along with each other, who ask for, required and needed our help and lost all the kings, queens and heads of state. during the past two World Wars.. And was it not the Americans who came up with the Marshall Plan to cut-and-paste all those European nations back together after those wars?... and they were STILL bickering over every minor little thing. Our history tells us how President Wilson nearly lost his mind dealing with that fiasco...it is any wonder he got sick in office? We lost thousand and thousand of our fathers and sons settling your battles.

It is ironic that the only country that brutally attacked us was the Japanese empire who remain compatible with us today. We I haven't heard any complaints from those quarters now have we?

Oh yes, and we are all fat and ugly too...yet we have so many teens here who are anorexic and bulemic trying to look like beauty queens and skinny Europeans. How mentally lame you are.

We Americans are not a warring nation...there are no warriors here save a few neo Nazi survivalist that are few and far between who live in the hills somewhere. Every country has it holligans, why would we be different? But yes, we are and will remain a strong nation...and that is what threatens you.

Okay, so you want to knock our President...you forget we change them periodically. It is a system that works. You ought to try on for size.

Clearly, the only good people of other nations are the ones who leave and come here to America. Gee, I wonder why? Funny, they don't fight with each other after the move here do they?.

Do you think we want our brothers, fathers, sisters, mothers "over there." in that hot stinking sandbox getting shot at by more of you who are so religious by the way and continue killing one another in your own civil war?

Did you think we would allow any group or country to attack us, take down the World Trade Center and sit back and say, "Oh Gee, someone doesn't like us" and not retaliate? Well, I guess you did. And, now we are a bunch of fat, ugly, warring killers, huh? I don't think so.

You ask what we "think" about Americans. . I think that some of the people who vented their spleen and spit out all those hateful soundbites are unable to "think" and need to get an education and learn that Americans go to war when called... and are called when attacked... and attacked we were. We don't want to be "over there." We want to be here...at home where we belong. Fighting your battles is not what we are about.

Get a grip....

I'm from Kuwait and have been living in Ireland. I have some American friends and I met a lot of them in Ireland. My American friends are wonderful people and I got along with them more than any others. But I feel that American people are a bit too enclosed within themselves in the US. Their information is almost entirely got from the media there. They are nice people but they need to be a little more open to the outside world.

UK....... Hopefully most people in the UK will not judge a whole nation and have a single opinion on it (in fact, people anywhere should not do that!) However..... it is difficult sometimes and when you are far away (on a little island!) we are led by the media and large situations. I am a teacher of A Levels and my subjects often call on me to compare all sorts of cultures including the UK and USA. It's hard for some Brit's to see primary school children reciting the "I love America speech" every morning and not see it as brainwashing. It's hard to see so many tax dollars being spent on other peoples wars without looking back on the lack of financial aid given to it's own people after the hurricaine - without seeing racism and oil. (Although it is hard to see our prime minister without his head stuck up your presidents' beam end! And we spend our tax pounds on other people's wars, etc)

In sum, you are a massive nation full of good people (hopefully) but around the world you can be seen as a bit gung-ho, shoot first ask questions later, still quite racist and religious fanatical......... I am just saying it as we see it over here!!

I am an American... a New Yorker.

This country is so diverse, how can you generalize the whole nation? But... if we're going to do that, I can say from talking to my relatives overseas that they generally like Americans, and they love American tourists who visit their country... though they maybe don't like American policies sometimes in foreign affairs. To the educated, I don't believe that the foreign policy issues changes their views of Americans as people or as tourists in their country. However, I stayed with a young cousin (17) of mine in her country and she hadn't met any Americans and was highly influenced by the fashionable HATE AMERICA HATE GEORGE BUSH movement and at first she was very stand-offish and anti-American. She bashed our country saying, "I would never want to go visit there" after I invited her to come and visit me here. After spending two days with her she had totally warmed up to me and my American travel companion and wanted more than anything to come visit us in the US... and she even wanted to go see Miami, Florida. Her brother goes to school at MIT here now too... so in some ways they love America... and definitely Americans... but the politics are another story.

I'm American and I am sick of the "ugly" americans. These are the americans that travel across the sea and expect every one to speak English, and talk down, and brag about the U.S. They're also the people that complain about the government but don't vote. Basically the bad stereotype of Americans.... they're out there, and they make the rest of us look bad. I'm especially sick of all the French bashing thats going on. Get over it America!

the most overentertained people on the planet, others are catching up, but people are so entertained, they don't follow whats going on in the rest of the world, or hold their government accountable for what they do. They're more intersted in what happened to people they don't know on a reality show (which is scripted) or to some stupid celebrity. Gore Vidal appropriately called it the United States of Amnesia. People have the attention span of a gnat.

I'm Colombian, and I live in Bogotá. I must tell you that I have always admired the United States. You were the first American Nation to be independent from Europe and that was an example to the rest of us. I've met nice and pleasant people in the States, but also people that have not been respectful to me just by the fact that I'm Colombian. And other nasty individuals.
But you'll find that kind of people everywhere.
There is a Myth of USA people saying that there'all fat and don't eat anything but fries and burgers. I know thats not true. Most of USA people are admirable.

STILL: I hate your current goverment! I can't wait 'til it ends.
