I use quite a good registry cleaner to clean the registry
http://www.toniarts.com/products.php?PHPSESSID=fad01fad935ff97257774b7c1eaff1b3
This is the Free Toniarts Easycleaner

The nice thing is it does so much more, and has never compromised or crashed any computer I have installed it on.

However remember to backup, and make a restore point.

Good Luck

the likes of ad-aware and spybot are pretty good at picking up anything that has gotten into your registry, that shouldn't be there. other than that, you can use windows own registry checker to check for missing or corrupt files. click on 'start' click 'run' then type 'scanreg' into the dialogue box and hit enter.
