I have recently been adopted by a cat but I don't know the first thing about them. I know dogs aren't supposed to be given chicken bones - but what about cats?

Raw chicken bones are fine. Have you ever seen a wild cat with its tasty mouse on a stick over a barbeque? Raw meat with bones is great for a cat. A chopped up chicken wing, a small amount of liver, (about the amount of a mouse liver).some gizzard and heart. This is a perfectly balanced meal -- lean muscle meat, calcium in the bone, Vitamin A in the liver, taurine in the gizzard and heart. Beef and turkey bones are just too big for a cat to manage easily.

Never just the raw meat alone. It is important to have the calcium/phosphorus ratio in the right balance. If you give just the meat without bone you throw that balance out of whack. Raw chicken necks are great teeth cleaners and many cats really dig them. Too much is not good. With the necks there is too much calcium and not enough lean muscle meat.

The wings, liver, heart and gizzard are readily available at the supermarket. You can make up little meal packets, freeze them and thaw out as needed.

No do not give any human food to the cat. They can break and splinter in a cat just like they can with a dog. Buy it a good quality cat food and get shots for it. If you can't take care of it then turn it into the pound so someone can adopt it and it won't get ran over or killed. Good luck.

Of course. Cats catch birds all the time and don't choke on the bones so why should chicken bones be any different?

Do not, ever, give cats any meat containing bones, or likewise fish with bones- they will kill. Also, dont give cows milk; they cant digest it. Thank you for caring about this cat; you must be a nice person. Make sure your cat has fresh water every day; you will find most cats like catbiscuits, like Iams or Go-Cat, or canned catfood otherwise, although this is problematical in hot weather. Good luck. xx
