I am looking for an apartment, but no one will take her b/c they say she is a pit bull. I read somewhere that people get the American Staffordshire and English Staffordshire confused and they are not the same. Can anyone help me with this and possibly link me to some information so I can find a place for me and my dog? Thanks!

The problem with getting an apartment with any of the bullie breeds, is that their insurance carrier will demand the landlord to carry another $100,000 worth of insurance..To the insurance companies, all of the similar breeds are alike..so, it isn't the landlord you have to convince...You might do better by searching for a house or cottage, or roomate situation.

What we call a "pit bull" in the US would be called an American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff) by the AKC.

The UKC recognizes the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT) as a breed.

An AmStaff is not the same as a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

Staffordshire Bull Terrier: http://www.akc.org/breeds/staffordshire_bull_terrier/index.cfm

AmStaff ("pit bull"): http://www.akc.org/breeds/american_staffordshire_terrier/index.cfm

A notable difference between the AmStaff and the Bull Staff is the size - AmStaffs are 17-19 inches at the shoulder, Staffordshire Bull Terriers are 14-16 inches at the shoulder.

If you've got a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, you may be able to use the AKC information to show that it's not the same breed, though they may have similar ancestry.

Well yes. American Bulldogs, APBT, Staffordshire Terriers, Bull Terrier... can all be considered by Pit Bulls. Althought that does not mean that your dog is an American Pit Bull Terrier.

The term Pit Bull is actually just a sub catagory that a few breeds fit into. For example the Labrador family. You have Golden Labs, yellow labs, chocolate labs etc. Kind of the same thing here.

look up the history of the American pit bull terrier. the apbt and the amstaff(American staffordshire terrier) used to be the same, but then the amstaff split off and started being bred for showing only. the pits were still used for fighting. most agree that the fight and aggressiveness have been bred out of the amstaff. the English staffordshire terrier should not be associated with the pit in any way.

Technically no. However the AKC judges based on the same criteria for both. But Pit Bulls cannot be registered as Staffordshire Terriers.
If you look at DogBreedInfo.com there are seperate pages for both breeds. You will need to provide information on both breeds (whats on this site should do) as well as certifaction of your dog and its breed. This should have been given to you when you purchased the dog.

Well she might be a pitt. But let the apartment people know that you have had that dog for many years now and has been totally harmless. Take her to a vet and have them write and sign a paper saying she is not a pitt. Good luck!!

I very own all 3. The staffy, bully, and interest sort pit. Of all 3 of mine, the staffy is the sweetest and maximum relied on. the interest being the main hyper and agressive. maximum all of them have staffy of their backgrounds in case you learn them. IE countless the biggest names available. circulate to a pair staffy breeders web content and you will see maximum are shown with their young babies around them. diverse bloodlines have diverse traits basically as some horses are greater proper are bred for cow horses, working, leaping ect so do your homework and discover that temperment contained in the strains.
