I'm looking for the name of the wife of William J. (Jasper) Phillips, of Clarksville, Montgomery County, TN. He was born Feb. 11, 1844. I have his parents; I have his children. I cannot find his wife. Since their daughter was born in 1872, I would think they'd be on there. If not, the 1880. His daughters' name was Eula Mae Coleman Phillips. I have access to neither of these. Please help; I've been looking for her name for years.

He was a wagonmaker in Clarksville. I have pictures. I know he was there. That he's not on the census confuses me. What can that mean?

Coleman was her grandfathers' name, since she had no brothers her father named her after him. He lived in Clarksville, which is the county seat now and was then. There's a 12 year period missing, during which time he got married. The only other place the family lived is Nashville, but I know for a fact that he never lived there. Besides, he owned a business; he'd have been called back to the county to account for his property during the census.

I don't know if this is your William J. Phillips but here is what I've found. On the 1870 Census there is no William Phillips in Montgomery County but there is one in Stewart County which is the county on the western border of Montgomery.

One possibility is that he lived someplace else in 1869 and just missed the census when he moved to Montgomery County.

Another possibility is that the county boundaries shifted since 1870.

Is it possible Coleman is a clue to Eula's mother's maiden name?

The Mormons gave us the 1880 for free:

I couldn't find William on it in Montgomery County, however. There are 47 entries for the surname in the county, none look good.

Try this:

If you can't find your county and year, check ancestry.com, if you are willing to give them a credit card number. It won't cost you anything if you cancel before your 30 day trial is up.
