I'm a cosmetologist and I'm glad to help! Usually the highlights you buy in a box at the store are to make the hair lighter, not darker. Make sure that what you have is actual brown haircolor and not a lightener. If it is the right kind of color there should be two bottles that you will mix together. One is the color, and the other is the developer. You will pour them together and mix them up after you pull the hair through the cap. Decide how thick you want the strands of hair to be (like chunks of color, or just small streaks?) and how much color you want (all over change of color or just a few strands here and there?). The cap will have dots, or maybe circles and dots depending on what kind it is. If you want small strands but a lot of them pull the hair (gently poke through the cap on top of the hole at an angle so you don't poke the head!) through each hole lightly - not a lot of hair. If you want bigger strands you can pull more through and do every other hole (or circle holes only) instead of every one. Once you get the hair that you want to color pulled through the cap mix your color and apply it to the strands of hair. The processing time will be 15 - 30 minutes depending on how dark you want the hair to be. When it it the right color (check by rubbing the stand with a towel or paper towel because the color will look darker than it is underneath) rinse it out iwth the cap still on. Lather the hair up and slip the cap off with the shampoo on the hair (makes it slide easier). IF you determine that what you bought is not color, but lightener do not proceed and do not follow these directions! Lighteners are completely different than color!! Hope that helps.

oh my sister used to do this all the time for people. you put on the cap & use the hook to pull sections of hair out through the holes. after you're satisfied with how much you have pulled out (whether you wanted alot or a little bit of streaks) then you apply the dye to the hair you've pulled out while the cap is still on & let that sit for the required amount of time. after the time limit i believe you take off the cap & wash the hair quickly like you would do with any normal dye job.

Number one your kit is missing the instructions, so I would go back and get the instructions out of another box. Number two we never use the cap and hook. It looks way more natural if you just style your hair the way you usually wear it and place the streaks where you think the sun would naturally hit it and them add more. It sounds more complicated than it really is. Just remember if you really screw up totally you can always dye over it. (Hairdressers, don't read this last part. )

Put the cap on, pull out strands of the hair with the hook (though the little holes) and apply the dye. That way, the dye just gets on the strands outside the cap and not on your scalp and the rest of it.
I'm not sure how long you're supposed to leave it in for, though.

put the cap on your head and tie it tight. use the hook to pull the hair through the little holes in the cap. if you want highlights framing your face, pull out hair just around the front of your face and the crown of your head. if you want lighlights all over, pull out pieces of hair all over. the smaller the pieces of hair are that you pull through, the more subtle the highlights will be. the larger the pieces you pull through, the chunkier the highlights. apply the dye to the hair you pulled through the cap and wait for about ten minutes. test a piece of hair by rinsing a bit of dye off and seeing how light it is. if you want it lighter, leave the dye on longer. if you like the shade you have, rinse the dye off. make sure the condition well, because the dye will dry out your hair!

if the cap has holes in it put all your hair under the cap then pull the pieces of hair you want dyed out and put the dye on it and let it sit for 5-15 minutes for semi permanent and 30 minutes under a dryer for permanent

you put on the cap and then push the hook in the little holes and pull out the amount of hair that you want colored. The more you pull out, the more color you will get in that area.
