why don't you try asking your family (it's cheaper)

No one is going to do your tree for free.

Some people volunteer their time and resources (like me), but we don't do the work for you. We will only help you when you hit a brick wall or need local research done (ie: you live in Hawaii but need a NYC lookup).

There are some free resources out there, but your best bet is to use a combination of free and paid along with research conducted by mail and in person.

One of the cheapest sites with a ton of resources is the Godfrey Memorial Library in CT.

www.godfrey.org

Membership is $35 a year and is worth 10 times what they charge.

The LDS church runs www.familysearch.org which is free. The only problem is that there are so many transcription errors.

genweb also hosts regional boards. Some have next to no resources and others are overflowing with information.

Ancestry is expensive, but you really cant beat being able to see things like your great-grandfathers actual signature on his WWI Draft card. They have amazing resources. They aren't # 1 and expensive because they suck, lol.

The best software for a family tree is Family Tree Maker. You can get past versions on Ebay for a fraction of a new version.

Yes - I did this a couple years ago as a school project with my daughter. The site and program that I used is Legacy Family Tree (available at www.legacyfamilytree.com). The basic edition and services are free, but even the deluxe edition is fairly inexpensive ( if I recall, under $20). It is a good program and they offer a some direct links to other sites that can assist you with researching family linage.

Here are some large free sites. No one will do it for you. (Almost no one. I did my nephew's "other side" for him. If you have an uncle or aunt whose hobby is genealogy, he/she might do it for you.)

These will let you do it yourself.

I save this and paste it because people ask the same question 1 - 4 times a day, either in Genealogy or somewhere else. If you search or browse the resolved questions in the genealogy category, you can find more links from other people.

http://www.cyndislist.com/
(240,000+ links, all cross-indexed.)

http://www.familysearch.com
(Mormon's mega-site)

http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi
(450,000,000+ entries, some excellent, some bad, most in between)

http://www.ancestry.com/learn/facts/default.aspx?ln=
Surname meanings and origins; no specific individuals, but fun.

These are for the USA only:

http://www.usgenweb.net/
(Subdivided into state sites, which all have county sites.)
(Canada has a Canadian Gen Web, with sites for each province.)

http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi
(Social Security Death index - click on "Advanced".)

http://find.person.superpages.com/
(US Phone book, for looking up distant cousins)

If you get serious, you should probably buy a genealogy program. I like Roots Magic. Family Tree Maker is very popular. Both are $29, but you can sometimes find old versions in discount bins at software stores.

The best way to start a family tree is to get married.
To find out about your family tree ask your family and then research on the internet.

You can start building your tree on genesreunited without paying. You only have to pay to ask anyone else on the site for information about possible mutual relatives.

Can you imagine how much research has to go into tracing a family tree? Of course no-one is going to do it for nothing! The only other way is to do the leg work yourself. Church registries etc...

There are none I guess as all of the sites are asking for money. Usually that's the basic way. You'll have to pay first.

I have looked too and there are none. I want to find a site where I can try to find my birth parents, but there is none for free either, also I don't know much about them. so if I want to find them I will have to pay.

I do it for free.

No, seriously, i don't know. I think you should ask your grandparents or great grands as far as they can remember, then if you're really committed pay for it. Or just suggest to some great aunt that she should take it up as a hobby and she'll do it and give it to everyone for christmas. Or maybe another realtive already did one, and then all you have to do it add to it the parts they didn't do.
