The US Navy is by far the most powerful navy on earth, today! The commitment by the US to maintain a powerful naval fleet has never subsided over the last fifty years. Not only does the US have a large, powerful, active naval fleet in every corner of the globe, it has a large mothballed fleet, that could be activated, should the need arise.

Thats hard to answer without consideration of size. The US is the only navy with the large Nimitz class carriers (12 in service at the moment I believe) and carriers rule the seas. Even if we only had 1 I still think that would put the US in a class by itself. Other navies (France & UK) have CV's but they are smaller with mostly VTOL aircraft so they don't have near the strike capabilities of a US Nimitz CV which fields around 96 aircraft. US Carriers are even more potent now with the introduction of the F/A-18 Hornet which can conduct Air Superiority as well as Strike missions. Presently the US is testing new strike aircraft that incorporate the technology of the F-22 Raptor.

The United States Navy is the most advanced seagoing force with more might then all the navies on the planet a half century ago. A navy's size is a crucial component in its force. If you were to stack one of our carriers against any other carrier, you would see that US Carriers are superior, same goes with submarines and every other boat we have floating.

It's pretty hard to judge a navy and not consider size. Because the US has the largest fleet though with the most advanced technology they have more ability to project their foriegn policy more than any other nation. Ultimately that's all that really matters.

From a professional point of view, I'd say the UK. From a technological point of view, it has to be the USN.
