It is normal to them, it's their culture. They are raised going to school 9 hour days, 6 days a week. Their work ethic is incredible. I don't know how they have the energy. I work here in Florida at a hospital. The company has hired in about 50 nurses from the Phillipines. Those Asian nurses will do 6 and 7 twelve hour shifts a week!! Meanwhile us American nurses are doing 3 twelve hour shifts which is considered full time, and we are tired! Asians are very hard workers, and also you very rarely see an overweight Asian.

They are efficient machines.
I'm not surpirsed a lot of them are brain dead zombies. You ever talk to some of them? Ever have a friend with a mail order bride? dumb as a brick. Damn do they ever work smart though, they'll stay at work for hours. Sometimes working double shifts and sleeping during their breaks.... funny, they don't ask for a raise though:p
I switched between three jobs in 7 years that let me work 100 hour weeks. When I start to get double time and a half, and still have time to party everyday, I feel great. I got addicted to the "protection" I had working there.
I don't know... I stayed in my comfort zone. Makes me look at the asians as being a little yellow bellied. I also see them as black, with thick skin. Do you ever look at other people with that kind of colour?

1 - Asians still believe in a little thing called 'honor.' It would be dishonor upon your whole family to 'work' like I am right now, sitting in an office wasting time on yahoo answers. Honor is hardly prevalent in American society, but still has a tight grip on Asia.
2 - Fierce competition for jobs and such.
3 - They make less than us, and so in order to live a comfortable enough lifestyle to survive they must work so much more.
4 - Their education system is far superior to ours and so they are using to putting in long hours already from the minute they start school.
5 - Less employee benefits and such.

Our american society just isn't as hard working. And besides, other than retail jobs, the majority of jobs in Asia are desk jobs, you sit and keep an eye on a computer to make sure nothings going wrong, it runs everything else. Kinda like what I do, cept I take calls once in a while. haha. I wouldn't mind doing that for 100 or so hrs a week.

Just lucky I guess! When I was in high school there was talk about making a 30 hour week a full work week. That was when we didn't import much, and everyone had enough money to live on!
How things have changed in 40 years!

this is not necissarily the case. The asians u know are probably working hard because it is in our society to work hard, If you work hard, and people see u working hard, more work will be dumped onto you. however, it is not always good. People need to find a good balance between social/work. Another possibility is that 100 hours a week does pull in quite a nice pay cheque.

Hmmm, i don't think all asians work over 100 hrs/wk. In America, I think asians and americans work the same number of hours.

Compare Americans to Europeans, not Asians. We all work too much, and the quality of life is too hectic. Wish the whole world would get that idea. Everyone needs to slow down.

I guarantee that people in their own small businesses normally put in more than 40-50 hours and the work is not boring and the time can go fast.

Americans are more interested in other things outside of work. In my middle class neighborhood, I can find a boat, RV, or some other form of outdoor recreation in almost every driveway. We work for a paycheck and enjoy a much less stressful life than our Asian brethren.
