I think selfishness is the base of it. It seems that selfishness and greed are the root of many problems.
So I say it is because something in it for them.
Many Hispanics here do not support either amnesty or open borders. Many of the Minutemen are Hispanics or part. And the majority want closed borders and no Amnesty-poll after poll shows this. People I know who are from Mexico say No Amnesty and Closed borders. So I would say--there is something in it for them-

My sentimentality (in that I would go for strictly screened amnesty in return for killing any non-seasonal guest worker program, but only IF we had cured the problem going forward) is based on equal parts practicality and sentiment.
On the sentimental side, I'd feel bad sending back those who at minimum had mixed messages from our government, particularly in California where whole social programs are structured for them.
On the practical side, I think once the problem is being addressed, Americans won't sit through years of deportations of the good sort. Look at all those articles about this community or that being up in arms because a vet or an honors student, etc., was being deported. I think to get no amnesty and pass a bill, we border security types would need to cut a deal with the slave labor types. Thereafter, I think there would be lack of enforcement and a guest worker problem that exacerbates the problem. We'd end up with both, much like the projections for the Senate Bill.
Statistically I must know some illegals but I don't know who they are. I don't have any personal stake besides a desire to see the schools in LA get better (oh, and it would be nice to get better benefits for the taxes I pay.)
However, that is where I come out.

as a pro illegal, i can say that i have no spouse, friend or family member that is illegal. i am a white american with american roots going back to the 1600s on both sides of my family. i work with immigrants, as a teacher and student, but i would have the same amount of work if there were no illegal immigrants. i just wouldn't get to use my spanish as much. my parents used to employ immigrants, so i understand the situation from their perspective, but they don't employ anyone anymore (in fact, labor was the issue that drove them out of business, and it wasn't the immigrants that were a problem).
i live near, work with and study with immigrants, both legal and illegal. the fact that i know them personally means that i have some understanding of their situation. if that's what you call "idle sentimentality" then i think your views are a bit off kilter. it is by seeing things from another's perspective that we learn how to get along with and respect people who are different from ourselves.
the other aspect that makes me "pro illegal" is the fact that i don't put law over humanity. i obey and respect most laws, but when i see that a law doesn't make sense in all circumstances, i think the law should be subject to revision. that's how our government works. imagine if we didn't revise laws!

Add to the sentimentality those who have "compassion". They probably also want to open the jails because of short comings of society.

Did you ever think that folks care about illegal immigrants just because they are HUMAN BEINGS.

I believe that they mean well but are terribly uninformed. Illegals are going to destroy this country and drain our resources.
