My sister Alicia just got married and wants to start a family right away. She can not have children so she is looking to adopt 2-4 kids ( not at the same time but throughout her lifetime and marriage) from America. She wants to start out with a 3-13 year old beacuse she knows how much infants are in demand and she wants an older child. Can you give her a site to get older children? Also, some sites for infant adoptions because she wants to do that too. Thanks!!

Best way is to tell her to start being a foster parent. There is a desperate need for them all over the country. From being a foster parent, she can more easily adopt because she has proven herself to provide a stable, healthy family environment.

Best of luck to her!

I don't know what state you're in, but since your sister is willing to adopt an older child, she should check out state organizations first. Just type in "adoption in _______" (fill in whatever state she's in). Here in Florida, adoption from the state is free. The drawback is they don't get many infants that don't have something wrong with them, but there are lots of older kids without parents. There are also different rules for different states, some require you to be married for 3 years before adopting and some require you to take a class that can last from 6 weeks to 12 weeks. Oh, and sometimes they have sibling groups that want to be kept together. At one time there was the cutest 1 and 2 year old brothers on one of the Florida sites. Someone adopted them very quickly. If she goes through an adoption agency, she's looking at spending $30,000 - $40,000 for one child. I have heard hiring an adoption attorney is cheaper and they find a child (or an infant) for you. I have not looked into the attorney thing yet. I just got married 2 months ago and my husband isn't quite ready for all of this yet, so I've just begun my research. Tell her good luck, adoption can be a very long and rough process. I know of a lot of people that have gone through it.

There are thousands of children in foster care who are available for adoption. Web sites that show children for adoption are showing children who they have not been able to place for whatever reason, so they are not a good representation.

Your sister can use any agency in her area to get certified and then work with the state to find a child. Agencies like Catholic Social Services are free. All of the children will have emotional problems, some severe, so unless your sister has experience with children I would recommend a very young child. You learn a lot of child psychology by raising them through the various stages.

PS: There is usually no cost at all for adopting a child from the state.

I don't claim to be an expert but as my pseudonym might suggest, my wife and I are adoptive parents. We went through an agency which only places newborns, apparently that's not what you are looking for right now.

Before even starting your sister and brother-in-law will need to make a few decisions, sounds like they at least have a start. Newborn or toddler? Domestic or international? Are they only considering a certain race or gender? What about a child born with medical problems such as Downs Syndrome or drug addiction?

Many church organizations provide adoption services. For example, a distant relative adopted through Catholic Charities and a friend went through Lutheran Child and Family Services. A friend of my sister went through Bethany, which is also affiliated with a church (sorry can't remember which). I might recommend government agencies such as Child Protective Services, or whatever the term is in your area. A law firm in Indianapolis by the name of Kirsh and Kirsh specializes in adoptions.

If you are considering overseas adoption look into European Adoption Consultants in Cleveland or Children of the World in St. Louis. I have heard good things about both of these groups. One of the largest agencies in Chicago is known as The Cradle. My wife and I met with them and were very turned off, but at this point I don't think you want to rule anything out.

Hope this helps.
