At close range I've killed them with 71/2 bird-shot, but don't use anything less than #4. Double 'O' or even slugs would be more humane.
Any reason why you aren't using a rifle?

Shooting coyotes with a pellet gun is neither legal, ethical or humane. Pellet gun projectiles lack the mass needed to penetrate enough for a humane kill. Even coyotes deserve a humane kill. If you are going to hunt coyotes, get a real rifle, not a damned airgun. A .22 Magnum will do at shorter ranges, but a .223 Rem, or a .243 Win will be much better. At 300 yards, they have more energy than your airgun will have at the muzzle. Doc

If you have a coyote problem you do not even have to shoot,find someone that knows where to get the type of poison that they spray peach trees with get a lemon and some type of syringe,inject the poison into the lemon sit the lemon where the coyotes frequent when they eat it they usually will not be able to make it 20-30 yardsand die,a coyote is the only animal around that I know will eat a lemon so you will not hurt the other animal this really does work!

4 buck is a much better choice than 00 buck...You don't get much of a pattern at 40yds with 00 buck, there are only 9 pellets in a 2 3/4in or 15 pellets in a 3in mag. 4 buck has either 27 in a 2 3/4in or 41 in the 3in mag..

.223 would make an excellent choice for those critters...a simple .22 will get the job done with a well placed shot behind the ear...if you only have a shotgun, then you can use the .00 buck, but you sacrifice distance and accuracy...

any thing i killed 5 yesterday with a 22.
If you have a coyote problem get raw meat and hand it with a Huck on a tree and when it wants to get it it will hand there o ya but if you want a shot gun 20ga

Personally I would use a rifle....25-06 is what I use...but even a .22 will work just fine.....
