I told my friend if I was ever to get married my wedding dress would be green, purple, or maybe blue. But she freaked out and said that it's tradition to choose white.

Depends on what tradition you follow. The white wedding dress was introduced by Queen Victoria and symbolized wealth because only royalty could afford a white dress that would only ever be worn once. Therefore it has nothing to do with purity or virginity...blue was considered the color of purity until white took it's place. Then everyone else followed suit after that.

Prior to that though, women got married in their best dress that they already owned which would be any color, red, blue, green, etc.

The only reason it is "tradition" is because Queen Victoria wore a white wedding dress and after that it was the fashion and now its the norm. Before that everyone just wore their Sunday best dress no matter what colour it was. I sure as hell won't be wearing white. My wedding dress is gonna be red and gold. So you do whatever you like honey and don't let some old dead queen put any pressure on your choices.

It's traditional because back in the old days, women were considered to still be a virgin and white represented "pure". Now, women are wearing more ivory or cream colored dresses.. still in the white color range, but not. I believe that a women wants to wear something other than white.. go for it! It's her wedding day.

Because white typically stands for purity and innocence. Traditionally, going into a marriage, the bride is supposed to be a virgin and pure...so white is used to symbolize that.
