My cat chases her tail when it starts to flap or sway even just a little bit. And not only when she does that, she makes these horrible screeching noises like she is furious with it. It has gotten so bad that she actually caught her tail with her paw which resulted in a 6inch tear along her tail and it’s not healing because she reopens a part of it everyday. Squirting water at her doesn't help. I've tried to pick her up when she does it but she bits and scratches me. I've tried to distract her from doing when she looks like she is going to start to chase it. I’ve been nice and kind to her when she starts to do it to maybe calm her down. I bought a sedative for her and she’s become immune to its effects. The interesting part is before her tear I’ve taken her into the vet and nothing is wrong with it. And after this tear I’ve talked to several vets and they have all been amazed. Do you think I should have the tail amputated?

Your cat needs to wear an e-collar you can get from the vet office until the tear has healed.

This seems a strange obsession. I have recently been trying a remedy I got from Dr. Jean Hovfe's site: www.littlebigcat.com for a cat who is an obsessive grooming and then gets hair stuck in her stomach and intestine. I have been giving it for about three weeks now. Sorry I can't report yet if this is helping a great deal.

Dr. Hovfe and her partner do behavioral and therapeutic consultations. The intake interview is free. Then they evaluate the problem and come up with suggestions and/or remedies for your cat. I had all the information about pricing written down and now can't find it. The information is there at the site. I figured it would not cost more than $100 to get some advice.

It would probably be much more to do a tail amputation and I would certainly try it. Dr. Hovfe is a very respected member of the veterinary community, she is a past president of the Amer. Assoc. of Holistic Veterinarians.

do no longer squirt the cat for this interest. he's protecting himself lively and engaged. he's having relaxing twiddling with himself. it is not any diverse than the persons who PAY for laser rules for his or her animals to chase around the room. I even have 2 cats. one likes to stability on a railing, lean over one component, and attempt to snatch her tail it is stunning on the different component. she additionally chases her tail in a circle. the different cat has seen this many situations and has on no account accomplished this. i think of that purely like human beings, some cats are goofier and extra hyper. that may not a flaw to punish it is something that makes each and every diverse and person. enable your cat be. why does this habit subject you lots?

how odd. When cats chase their tails it is cute. But that isnt cute when it hurts its self. I would say put a cone thing around its head like then they are supposed to stop chewing at their feet. This way the tail can heal at least. To stop the kitty from doing that all together i really am not sure. Maybe like one person said to get her tail trimed by a professional.

How strange! I've seen cats do this and I think it's adorable, but I've never seen a masochistic one actually hurt itself doing this. I would just make sure she has something to do or play with. I would say get her a friend, but I'm afraid she would be as cruel to it as she is herself. Just make sure she's able to take out her aggression, but do not cut off her tail!

Your cat is attacking it because of the same reason she would attack a mouse. They want to catch it. If you must, for her safety and health, have her tail shortened by a doctor.

Try bitter apple on the tail so it doesn't bite it again.

Most cats outgrow this
