I have answer alot of question on here and also read quite afew where people keep belittling religions what I would like to know why they have to do this? everyone is entiled to have ther own beliefs just don't put people down for what they believe as more wars are coursed by religion than anything else .. so shouldn't we all just try and accept each other as we are and treat people as we want to be treated

I think it is unhelpful to belittle a persons faith, but that's not to say it shouldn't be challenged, What concerns me about the major monotheistic religions is they all claim to be the only true faith. This doesn't leave much room for compromise and thus even less scope for agreement when they inevitably disagree with each other and the wider secular society.

Yes I think greater tolerance is needed.

I agree everyone should have their own beliefs, however religion is man made, we know this because man has written all the holy books.
The think is take all they read as the truth, yet when you question the bible you can find in many places it is in correct, dates are wrong, places are wrong, and most of these can be proved to be wrong.
How many so called religious people bother to check, for example the translation from Hebrew has not been done correct, an example of this is the so called virgin Mary, should have read Young woman there was no mention of virgin,.
So it's not always a question of belittling it, it just knowing that anything man has done over the years can not be trusted, an example we kill in God's name, no God would want this.
Religion is for the foolish, those easy brainwashed, what we need is faith in God, and ourselves

Surely your question in and of itself highlights the reason why so many people take issue with religion...It IS the root of much violence and recrimination throughout history. I personally feel that in a modern society where we can even produce the blueprint to the human body that religion is an anachronism created in ties past where education and control were harder to win. i refuse to live my life by the social morase of somebody who died a millennium before I was born. I respect the need to people to latch onto religion like a life preserver if they can not face life alone but I can and do not feel I should cow toe to any religion, or be dictated to just as I would not force my beliefs or lack thereof onto anyone.

Because it's called freedom of speech and I'm afraid that's life. Most of the time people belittle religion because they get it rubbed in their faces that they will go to hell if they don't pray for the Lord (utter codswallop!) and one person yesterday said non-believers should be stoned! Where's the peace in that?! I would never wish someone to be stoned so do I deserve to go to hell? I am a very peaceful, caring, kind, atheist and I don't go around shouting about the fact that I'm a non-believer. The only thing I am is opinionated but that is harmless and I don't wish harm on anyone, whether it be condemning them to hell, stoning or being blown up!

The idea is that we (collectively) test notions and concepts through reasoned discourse, arriving at valid (albeit personal) conclusions. Religion, Sex and Politics however are the 3 exceptions that prove the rule, becasue when you discuss them, you inevitably offend someone, no matter how well intentioned you may be to start with.

Personally I agree with you - it's a big old world and there's room for everyone if we can be a little more relaxed and chilled about everything.

As a teacher once remarked: "No! It's the spirit of tolerance, you fool!"

Which just about sums it up for me. ;-)

Unfortunately, belittling religions has been going on for thousands of years and doesn't look like it will change any time soon. I totally believe in what you say, but their are a lot of people who twist religion into some sort of hateful thing and use it to bash other people based on religion.

You could possibly achieve your goal, but all religious preachers just pump their one theory (God exists) down our throats.

When the science community makes a discovery or modifies a theory they publish a paper for all to view, speculate on, and debate. Invariably such discoveries open up our simplistic minds and expand our horizons. Examples would be the works of Einstein and Hawking, to name a very small sample.

So why do preachers have to continually pump their one theory (God exists) down our throats. Why do they stand on street corners and hand out leaflets, yell at passers by, gather huge crowds and push unsuspecting victims over in the belief they will be cured of whatever mental or physical ailment invades them, if they just believe in the theory of God.

Why can’t the believers of religious theory just behave in a decent manner, in much the same way as the scientific community does. The answer to all of these questions is simple. They know their theory of God is wrong, and saturation mental and verbal bombardment is the only way they can convince people, and they do it directly or indirectly for money.

Yeah, everyone has the right to be wrong. I also have the right to go ha ha, look at the funny people.
Religion is the systematic practise of the irrational, and does wrong.
That is the point. In the name of religion, harm is being done, world wide.
In your question, you state

as more wars are coursed (sic) by religion than anything else

QED!

Richard Dawkins put it well 'Good people do good things, bad people will do bad things. But for good people to do bad things, that takes religion.'
The sleep of reason breedeth monsters.

It's due to the fact that 9 times out of 10 it's the religious people that spread the most hatred and bigotry...

Religion as a whole does nothing but promote intolerance...

Because religion causes more harm than good. Take a good hard look at all of the good things that are attributed to religion... how many of those can be done without religion? I'm willing to bet it's all of them.

Religion doesn't make bad people do good things, but it does make good people do bad things.
