Right click on the item/file you wish to play. In the list pick 'open with'. A box will open with a list of media players and other programs. Select the media player you wish to use. Look toward the bottom of the box and there's a check box that says "Use this as my default player".
Check the box and you should be good to go!
Have a great day!!!

In any folder, click on on tools and select ''folder options''

Under the tab File types, you see a list of every extension that can be used on your computer. You can select your movie types (i.e. ''avi'' or mp3 or mpeg...) and select the the program you want.

If you're trying with a major software like windows media player or wuicktime, I'm pretty certain there is a way to do it in the program (normally in tools-options or preferences...)

My Computer
C:
Tools
Folder Options
File Types

-- locate the extension of the file type you want to change, for example AVI - scroll down to AVI and click on Change.

From there you can chose the program you want to open that extension with. If you don't see it, browse for it, select it, and Okay your way out.
