If you've ever grated cheese for preperation, and tasted it, it just tastes great. Why is that? Is it a surface area/volume ratio thing?

Because of the maximum amount of surface area of the cheese on your tongue.

the packaged grated cheese has a powdery stuff on it... I think that has something to do with it.
But I think the reason grated cheese tastes better is because it's less dense when its grated, it's not just a solid block, it's softer and maybe the air getting to more of it does have an effect.

I like cheese any way you slice it or grate it or not. I think it all taste great never noticed that it taste different when grated.

You savour the taste more when the cheese is grated into smaller portions?

When the cheese hits the grater, it enters what I like to call the "flavor enhancement zone", at which point the cheese reaches its maximum flavor potential.
