I'd have to say to help her pick out her own new companion. Make a day of it by taking her to lunch and then to your local animal shelter. Talk to the shelter workers about the personalities of the dogs and what your mom is looking for in a dog.
The choice of a dog is very personal and a big decision and I know that I wouldn't want anyone making it for me. I have to see each individual dog and interact with it to know whether or not we will be good for each other.

Hello Kay...
First of all, I'm very sorry about the loss of your father, I hope you and your mother are coming through this difficult time with strength and peace. x
Whenever your mother feels ready to begin taking care of a pet... and it can sometimes be a good thing to wait a while... but only you and she will know when it's the right time... then start looking at different breeds and talk to her about what kind of a dog she might enjoy being with or indeed have the finances to take care of as something that all animal carers know is that some pets can be pretty expensive to look after.
Would she like a big fluffy gentle dog or a small talkative energetic dog...? This is very important to establish...you need to have a dog with a personality to suit your mother and her lifestyle. Have a good long chat about it with her..perhaps you already have.
One of the best things that you can do and that I see recommended again and again by professional carers of animals is to go to your nearest largest dog home, or RSPCA home/centre and tell them your plans. They will talk to you and take you around the whole centre until your mother finds the little companion that she is looking for. They even have puppies in these places and she may just click with one of these dogs and fall in love with a little friend there and then... it very often happens!! They will allow her to have a little time with various different dogs she chooses too so that she can get a feeling for them and see how their personalities are etc, before she decides.
They will really help you with your selection as they really want to find new and loving homes for these animals. These animals are longing for love and kindness with a caring owner and give great rewards to anyone giving them a chance. So many people have said that they were so glad that they chose that route instead of spending a lot of money on a puppy as the personal rewards and joy is so much greater.
Whatever you decide... I'm sure the right one will jump out at you... ( and give your face a lick probably!) I hope she deeply enjoys being with her new friend.
take care. :o) x

I would actually take your mom to the local kennel (or dog store) to see which is the most compatible with her. Most people get a a good feeling of a dog by actually interacting with them directly.
To go just on breed alone can be asking for trouble, as it doesn't take into account all the things the dog may (or may not have) gone through in their lives with past owners.
Sorry for your loss. i am sure your mother will love the addition of a dog to help ease the pain a bit.

That is a wonderful thought. But I believe dogs are a very personal thing and your mother should choose the dog she wants. There's so many things to consider - how active is she? what size does she like? does she like long hair or smooth?
If nothing else, get her a book to look at so she can see lots of different kinds of dogs, then research the breed. Or take her to a shelter with you.

So sorry for your loss!! If she likes small dogs, get her a chihuahua. They are very loving and can be a great companion for an elderly person or anyone. They like nothing better than to sit in your lap and be your best friend. Could be a great comfort for your mother.

Black labs make great companions. They tend to be even tempered, easy to train, and they love their human companions. I'm sorry for you and your Mom on the loss of your Dad.
P.S.- Or you could go to a local animal shelter and get a dog there, they are often mixed breeds and those also make very nice pets, plus you'll be saving a dog's life.

Talk to your Mom first. Sure, pets are great company, but only if someone wants one and can take care of them.
I'm sorry about the loss of your Father. But, before you just get your Mom a dog (or any type of pet) find out if she really wants one.
Nothing can replace Dad, just as nothing can replace a lost pet.
Please talk to and discuss this with your mom before you do it.

First of all...sorry for your loss! :( I like the idea of letting your mom pick out the dog, but also I really like terriers for older people. That is..if your mom is considered "older". They have great personalities and make funny faces! :D
