Because I obviously can't take them home from the beach, but I still want to count them, but they all look alike to me. Is there any way to tell them apart so that I can count them? Not counting, of course, picking them up so that they pinch me or anything.

You can if you net off sections of the water. Do three sections, about 100 feet apart, all equal in the amount of space thats netted, and count, estimate the # of crabs in each section. Then you can take a measurement of the length of the beach you are counting in, and multiply using this equation:

Average of the three spaces, so
10' X 10' space, = 15 crabs
10' X 10' space - 12 crabs
10' X 10' space = 14 crabs

15 + 12 + 14 = 41 crabs

Say the length of beach is 500 feet.

500/41= 12.19 crabs (per 10X10 netted area)

500/ 10= 50 feet

50 X 12.19= 609.5 crabs in a 500X10' area, approximately.

You can count them as you set them free or get a bucket ad count them as you put them in. I love counting crabs, well I like catching them better. Anyways, good luck!!!!!
