Name them ALL your "best men" and have them ALL stand with you - oldest to youngest at the altar.
Divide the duties of the best man amongst them evenly.
- Bachelor party - groomsman one
- tux and flower pickup on wedding day - groomsman two
- Drive to the church - groomsman three.
It'll work better if you explain that the reason you did this is BECAUSE you cannot choose amongst them.
Tell them that oldest-to-youngest is just tradition.

Just let them know that they're all equally great, and go by time known again. Or, you could just have 3 best men or no best man. I mean seriously, what do you need one above all the others for anyway? Other than like throwing the bachelor party or handing the guy the rings.

Why don't you use the same theory you used with your original best man? The one you've known the longest. Seemed to work the first time.
OR...you could go with the one that you think will be able to help you out more on day of wedding.

Have the guys play a one-on-one basketball tounmant for the spot.
Or seriously split the duties three ways. One guy gives the reception speech, one guy holds the ring in the ceremony, one guy plans the bachelor party. Choose based on their skills, who is the talker, who is the partier, and who can you trust with the ring?

Choose your next oldest friend or how about have them draw straws for it. Or, you could explain your dilemma to them and see what they think. They may offer you a good solution. Perhaps being up-front with them would be the best way to solve your problem. I wish you good luck and a happy wedding.

Hey my husband backed out of his best friends wedding because he was diagnosed with cancer. Everyone understood. His best friend picked the person who he felt closest to after my husband.
This is your wedding, you make the call on who you want next to you. You cant please everyone all the time. If someone gets offended then maybe they arent as good of friends to you as you thought.

I don't think the others will be offended. You're getting married, they should be honored to be a part of that no matter what their official ceremony title.

It should be enough that they are already given such an honor. Go with your heart.
If you can't do that:
Draw straws.
Say your wife made the decision.
