I think that the information above on tax treaties is misleading. Generally, the treaties only apply to temporary visitors. If you get a green card, you are a US resident and not a resident of a foreign country. Generally, in this case, even the limited exemptions in the tax treaties don't apply to your earnings.

It's partly true. Some foreigners that work here get the benefits of a tax treaty with their respective country. They range in time, depending on the country from and the period they stay. Generally they exempt smaller amounts of money, I'm not sure of all of them, but most are around 5,000. They aren't exempt on all income ever, just up to a certain amount. If the immigrant gets status to be recognized as a citizen/resident, they lose the treaty from their country.

But then again, they don't get a standard deduction, so the treaty generally makes up for that.

Update - I had clarified that if the immigrant receives status, they lose treaties and don't get any benefits. The rumor has to start somewhere and I was trying to explain the root of it, and a lot of the time immigrant is used to refer to foreigners, not always ones that are immigrating. Some people who come legally get Visas and aren't citizens and don't use the same tax method as citizens. There are some treaties that exempt more than 10,000.
